In this groundbreaking, eye-opening, conversation-starting, film, co-star Alex Jamieson helped to change the way we think about fast food and how what we eat affects our bodies.

But 10 years after Super Size Me rocked America, we’re still facing some big challenges.

People who desperately need good nutrition, like the working poor, don’t have access to it. Our children are still bombarded with junk food messaging, and our schools have yet to embrace healthier lunch programs and nutrition education.

And at home, we still deal with emotional eating issues, weight problems, and body image troubles. Even when we know that we could be doing things differently to eat better, the idea of fixing healthy food at home seems like a chore.

Which is why I’m excited and honored to join Alex (and her 30+ food experts) on her mission to #FixFood. We met last year and I am so impressed with the wonderful work she is doing! She is a woman on a mission – that’s for sure! Alex is truly a passionate and inspirational leader in the health and wellness field.

9 Steps to Calm the Anxious Mind: Nourishing Hope Support Club

The Nourishing Hope Support Club is led by nutritionist Julie Matthews and created to help support families of children with autism and ADHD to understand how to apply food and nutrition choices based on each child’s individual biochemistry. She has extensive experience on how food compounds such as salicylates, oxalates, glutamates, and food proteins affect learning, mood and health.

Once a month, Julie discusses emerging research, shares her clinical experience, answers your questions, and interviews special guests. These monthly talks help parents learn to make the most of food and supplement choices, identify possible pitfalls, and stay on track toward improving the health and learning potential of their child. Each month brings content-specific learning topics about how various special diets (gluten-free, GAPS, Paleo), nutrition concepts, and supplements help children with ADHD, autism, sensory processing disorders, and learning and developmental delays.

I am pleased to announce that, this month, I will be the guest presenter on the Nourishing Hope Support Club with Julie Matthews. I will be speaking on “Food and Mood: 9 Steps to Calm the Anxious Mind.”

There is much recent evidence supporting the powerful food-mood connection and there are some very exciting recent studies that support this for both anxiety disorders, stress and other mood disorders. I use a comprehensive 9 step approach with my clients to help them overcome their anxiety, depression, emotional eating and sugar cravings. It is, of course, customized to their unique biochemistry, and includes:

  1. Real whole traditional food, including quality grass-fed red meat and 4 unique antianxiety food solutions
  2. Why and how to quit sugar with no willpower required and how to control blood sugar swings
  3. The effects of caffeine
  4. The importance of optimal digestion
  5. The bad-mood effects of gluten
  6. How to balance brain chemistry with individual amino acids to improve mood and stop cravings in their tracks
  7. How to correct social anxiety / pyroluria with zinc and vitamin B6
  8. The effects of other nutrients (such as low vitamin D), hormones and medications
  9. Simple lifestyle changes that include sleep, exercise and yoga

In preparation for the call, I shared some of the recent research with Julie:

There is a growing body of evidence supporting the very powerful connection between food and mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression. Dr. Felice Jacka, is an Australian researcher who is one of the lead researchers on food and mental health.

In this 2010 study in The American Journal of Psychiatry, lead author Dr. Jacka, found that a “western” diet of processed or fried foods, refined grains, sugary products, and beer was associated with a higher risk of anxiety and depression in women. The “traditional” diet or real whole food diet was associated with a lower risk of anxiety and depression. This real whole food diet did include grass-fed red meat and she believes following the recommended weekly intake of red meat could boost our mental health.

Dr. Felice Jacka is also the lead author in a 2011 PLoS One paper that found that diet quality in adolescents was associated with a lower risk of mental health issues. They found that “improvements in diet quality were mirrored by improvements in mental health over the follow-up period, while deteriorating diet quality was associated with poorer psychological functioning.” The author stated that this “study highlights the importance of diet in adolescence and its potential role in modifying mental health over the life course.”

I exhibited at the recent Integrative Medicine for Mental Health / IMMH conference and appreciate the support of my sponsors or “partners.” 

Designs for Health, a professional brand, offered exclusively to health care professionals and their patients through referral, donated bottles of Zinc Challenge for my zinc testing.   This is something I like to do at events because zinc is such a common deficiency, especially when it comes to anxiety and depression.  Low zinc is common in pyroluria – you can do the pyroluria questionnaire from my book to determine if this may be an issue for you.  There are 4 different levels of the zinc taste test: here is more information and an example of how it should taste.

Mira Messy, NE, author of The Pantry Principle: How to read the label and understand what’s really in your food.   I had 10 of her wonderful books on display and available for purchase, plus a small standup poster with information, plus space on my signup sheet for people to get on her email list.  We did a trade and she is going to be exhibiting at HMN Natural Living Conference  on Oct 12 and will reciprocate with my book The Antianxiety Food Solution: How the Foods You Eat Can Help You Calm Your Anxious Mind, Improve Your Mood, and End Cravings.

Hawthorn University  “is dedicated to providing supportive, comprehensive, and professional education in the fields of holistic health, nutrition, and the health sciences through the utilization of distance education methods. Hawthorn offers online undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate degrees, certificates and continuing education programs to a diverse community of adult learners working to enhance health and wellness around the world.” I displayed fliers for these programs at my booth and was available to answer questions that my booth visitors had about their programs.

Amazing Amino Acids for Ending Emotional Eating – No Willpower Required! Really!!

We start Monday with this live course where I am going to share the five brain chemical imbalances and respective amazing amino acids that can end cravings and emotional eating.

If you have these symptoms, then amino acids may help:

  • LOVING a certain food (do you just LOVE pizza or really LOVE cookies as a reward or to numb!?)
  • wanting caffeine or sugar for a pick me up in the afternoon
  • afternoon or night time cravings for carbs
  • poor sleep

Gluten, leaky gut, LPS, anxiety and Dr. Tom O’Bryan at NANP

I’m just back from a great few days at THE best nutrition conference – the annual conference of the National Association of Nutrition Professionals http://www.nanp.org/conference/speakers-sessions/

Dr. Tom O’ Bryan, DC, an expert on gluten, presented the following in his very interesting talk:

  • “One particularly detrimental consequence of increased intestinal permeability” (or leaky gut) caused by gluten sensitivity or celiac disease “is the translocation of bacteria (e.g., E. Coli) and bacterial products (lipopolysaccharides or LPS) also known as endotoxin which creates a proinflammatory environment and increases the oxidative stress burden in the enteric nervous system”
  • “Even minute doses of microbes within the gastrointestinal tract, levels that do not trigger an immune response, are capable of influencing neurotransmission in the paraventricular hypothalamus, the central nucleus of the amygdala and the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis. All three of these regions are involved in the processing of emotions related to anxiety and mood.”
  • “It is suggested that patients with” depression “should be checked for leaky gut by means of the IgM and IgA panel used in the present study and accordingly should be treated for leaky gut”.

In summary, gluten sensitivity or celiac disease can lead to leaky gut which can in turn allow endotoxins called lipopolysaccharides/LPS to relocate into the blood stream. This causes inflammation, oxidative damage, neurotransmitter deficiencies and depression and anxiety.

The study above, refers to depression, however, research also shows that LPS plays a role in stress and anxiety too.

Dr. O’Bryan also discussed the role that LPS plays in rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune and musculoskeletal disorders.

Dr. O’Bryan recommends IgG food intolerance testing to identify leaky gut (if you show up with food intolerances to many foods then leaky gut may be an issue) and then to first heal the gut.

These foods will need to be eliminated for at least 3 months and then added back slowly and one at a time.  Many people are surprised to find out that they have issues with seemingly healthy foods like salmon, green beans, peas, strawberries, almonds etc.  Of course, eliminating gluten goes without saying. This is the approach that I use with my clients and is part of the holistic approach that must be used when someone has any mood or physical health problem.

He also talked about LPS antibody testing from Cyrex labs and I look forward to learning more about this.

It was a really great conference, with locally sourced gluten-free meals included in registration! I am gluten-sensitive and it was such a pleasant change to be able to attend a conference and know that what I’m eating won’t affect me!

I’m excited to be participating in the Emotional Eating Loving Food Loving Life telesummit being hosted by Aimee Serafini, a women’s empowerment coach and an energy psychology practitioner specializing in helping people transform their personal relationships with themselves and others.
