“Betrayal” Episode 1 – teenagers with time on their hands!

November 15, 2016 By Trudy Scott Leave a Comment

“Betrayal – the Autoimmune Disease Solution They’re Not Telling You” is hosted by Dr. Tom O’Bryan, author of the bestselling new book The Autoimmune Fix.

Overview of Episode 1

  • What really is auto-immune disease?
  • The true impact of auto-immune disease in US and other countries. What is functional medicine and how is it different from conventional medicine?
  • The facts behind why medication is not the core solution. Inspirational personal case studies of patients being healed by the functional medicine protocols.
  • Who is Dr. Tom O’Bryan and what’s his purpose with the ‘Betrayal’ documentary series?

At the turn of the 20th century, autoimmune diseases were found in about 1 in 10,000 individuals. And now as many as 1 in 4 are on the autoimmune spectrum!

That’s an unbelievable change in a remarkably short period of time. It’s not because our genes have changed much over that short period of time. That’s why it is a modern epidemic. And it’s mostly accrued in the last 30 years.

In this first episode, you’ll actually learn how your body is trying to protect you, and modern therapies and medications are designed to block your immune system, instead of work with it.

Here is a snippet from the brilliant Liz Lipski, PhD, CCN, CNS, CHN about autoimmunity:

In my eyes it’s a misfire between what our immune wants to be doing and what it should be doing. When we lived in a more pristine, more traditional culture, here we lived close to the earth and where we had parasites, where we ate food that was fresh and we didn’t have refrigerators and foods spoiled, the immune system had a lot of really good things to do. And now our immune system in this modern age seems a lot to me like a group of teenagers with time on their hands, and so they get into mischief because they don’t have their old jobs to do.

We’re exposed to toxins, we eat foods that are unusual, we’re stressed out, we have molds, we have all kinds of unusual situations that are different from even 150 years ago, and the immune system just sort of overreacts. They say it’s like it’s your birthday and everyone is singing happy birthday and you have the cake and the candles are lit and everyone is just expecting you to blow out the candles and you rip out your fire extinguisher. That’s an autoimmune disease – it’s an overreaction of the immune system to a normal event

In my last email about this event I mentioned that there are 159 diseases that are on the autoimmune spectrum? I had no idea!

Some of the commonly recognized ones are Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, lupus, MS, rheumatoid arthritis, celiac and Graves’ disease. Less well-recognized is the role of autoimmunity in CFS, Alzheimer’s disease, fibromyalgia, Lyme disease, lichen planus, interstitial cystitis, endometriosis and other conditions.

And of course, we can see anxiety and depression with any of the above conditions so this series is very relevant to us all!

Here are some of the positive feedback from viewers who have watched Episode 1:

  • Brought tears to my eyes to know that there are clinicians out there that REALLY care.
  • I cannot thank you enough Dr. Tom for this series. I have been in the exercise and nutrition industry for many years and have believed the true path to healing is with food, supplements, exercise, down-time, sleep, etc. I was told that the vitamins and diet I chose to follow would kill me at an early age. Well, that did not happen. I have felt lost in our diseased world and I am so excited to get all this information. It may be overload, but it is empowering me to move forward with this cause.
  • Dear Tom, At last I’ve found people who know what they are talking about – I’ve been searching for so long. I’ve felt abandoned by allopathic medience and have been searching for alternatives and have tried various different system. From listening to your overview I note that I have already started to do some of the things you suggset Tom and I am now looking forward to tomorrow’s session and to gaining a healthier furture. You have given me something very important – you have given me hope. THANK YOU, Mary
  • This information is fantastic. I have been following the Institute of Functional Medicine for the past couple of years. I am not a practitioner but I believe in this type of medicine and was moved by James’ testimonial at the end of EP1. I am at the same place in my life, “how do I want to spend my time from here on out”. Fullfilment and purpose in life can also improve health. There is such a connection between the mind, spirit and the body. Integrative psychiatry is also a part of functional medicine. Right now we need more functional medicine doctors and psychiatrists.

Here’s each of the breath-taking episodes you’ll have the opportunity to watch each evening:

The Anxiety Summit – Anxiety and digestion: the microbiome, stomach acid, bile and the vagus nerve

June 10, 2016 By Trudy Scott 50 Comments

Liz Lipski_Anxiety4

Prof. Liz Lipski, PhD, CCN, CNS, was interviewed on the Anxiety Summit by host of the Anxiety Summit, Trudy Scott, Food Mood Expert and Nutritionist, author of The Antianxiety Food Solution.

Anxiety and digestion: the microbiome, stomach acid, bile and the vagus nerve

  • The microbiome – how these microbes are “us” and not different from us
  • Low stomach acid and the effects on protein/zinc/iron absorption, and candida
  • Low bile production and fat absorption issues
  • The vagus nerve, enteric nervous system and neurotransmitter production

Here are some gems from our interview:

So just to start the microbiome itself is not something separate from us but it’s the most newly recognized organ that we have in the human body.  And it’s comprised of viruses, bacteria and fungi.  And they’re like our rainforest and they live in every epithelial cell surface of our body so they’re on our skin, they’re in your lungs, in your hair, in your nailbeds.  They’re in your genitourinary system, in your digestive system, in your nose.  They’re really everywhere and I think that we’re also going to find that we have these microbes inside of our brain and inside of our liver and I think the more we learn we’re going to find that they’re really everywhere.

The thing that excites me about them is that they really help run our metabolism, help determine whether we’re fat or thin, help determine what our moods are like and how we feel.

I just love this comment about the microbiome:

And honestly I never know are we just a big bag for carrying around these microbes and they’re really the intelligence in our body or what?  Because they’re kind of like the superstars and we’re really a super organism.  And without them we don’t function at all.

Here is some of what covered in the gut brain connection section:

We make a lot of neurotransmitters in our gut.  In fact we make about 80 to 90 percent of our neurotransmitters like serotonin.  We make most of it in our digestive system and not in our brain at all.  And when you start looking at it, it’s like wow, you look at dopamine and epinephrine and norepinephrine and all of these are made in great abundance in the digestive system itself and again they help modulate again the microbiome.  They help modulate gut motility, so how fast or how slow the food moves through our digestive system.

Here is a fascinating article that covers much of the new research. The tantalizing links between gut microbes and the brain : Neuroscientists are probing the idea that intestinal microbiota might influence brain development and behaviour.

We cover hydrochloric acid and minerals:

So hydrochloric acid is really important for that.  It also helps us just break down proteins so that our digestive enzymes don’t have to work so hard.  And then it also in the beginning of the small intestine which is called the duodenum -it’s the first 12 to 18 inches – what happens is that the acid is still there before it get neutralized by the pancreas which secretes basically baking soda and neutralizes it because it’s done its job.  But in that first big part of the small intestine, the duodenum, is where we absorb iron and calcium and zinc and to a lesser extent magnesium and copper.  And so when we don’t have enough acid we’re more likely to get mineral insufficient.

This is the book she mentions in the interview – Why Stomach Acid Is Good for You: Natural Relief from Heartburn, Indigestion, Reflux and GERD by Jonathan Wright

why stomach acid is good for you

NANP 2012 Golden Carrot awards for Impact, Service and Going Up: Trudy, Liz and Sara

May 19, 2012 By Trudy Scott 15 Comments

Each year the National Association of Nutrition Professionals / NANP (www.nanp.org) awards three Golden Carrot awards during the annual conference:

  • IMPACT: awarded to a member who has obtained visibility in the wider world during the past year. It could be a book, a TV show, testimony before a Senate Committee on Health Promotion, or other project that they executed with impact
  • SERVICE: awarded to a member whose efforts at mentoring and building connections that grow the holistic nutrition community deserve recognition
  • GOING UP: awarded to a member, in professional practice for one year or less, who has already begun to obtain visibility, success and distinction in their business.

I was honored and humbled to receive the 2012 Golden Carrot Award for IMPACT.

Nicole Hodson, NC shared this heart-felt story before making the award announcement:

“Trudy Scott is the reason I am here today, as Executive Director of NANP.  Trudy became my nutritionist when I turned to her for help with weight loss a number of years ago.  Although I had been reading up on nutrition and trying to make changes on my own, I didn’t see the results I wanted until I began working with Trudy.  Most importantly Trudy was able to advise me on the holistic approach to some of my difficult hormonal health challenges.  In fact, Trudy was such an inspiration to me that I decided to pursue an education in holistic nutrition myself.  Trudy continues to inspire me as she tirelessly pursues new educational and growth opportunities.”

I’m smiling as I write this …as I have grown in my nutrition career I have been inspired by so many before me and it is truly wonderful to be able to inspire others! And to inspire someone like Nicole, whose has done so much for the organization, is truly wonderful!

Nicole continued:

“I would like to announce that Trudy Scott, CN is the 2012 NANP IMPACT winner. Trudy has done everything that fits this award’s description. Trudy obtained visibility in the wider world by being a focused leader as the past president of the NANP and organizer of the fight against CA AB575.  She is the current chair of the legislative affairs committee and continues to support our members to protect their right to practice. In June 2011, she released her first book, The Antianxiety Food Solution – How the Foods You Eat Can Help you Calm Your Anxious Mind, Improve Your Mood and End Cravings (New Harbinger) and has been presenting on food and mood at the national level and has become known as the Food Mood Expert.  She demonstrates passion and commitment on all levels and has the time to help anyone who needs it. Trudy truly is a passionate leader and a supporter of others.”

Trudy receives the 2012 NANP IMPACT Award from Nicole

I am so honored to be in the company of the other amazing award winners, Liz Lipski, Ph D, CCN, and Sara Edison, Certified Nutrition Consultant.

Liz received the SERVICE award:

“Liz Lipski, a nationally known clinical nutritionist, author of Digestive Wellness, and speaker has been an inspiration to the nutrition community for many years. She” is the founder of Innovative Healing,  “implemented a mentoring program for recent graduates and is the Director of Doctoral Studies at Hawthorn University. In 2012, Liz became an advocate for our industry as seven states attempted to pass licensure bills that would restrict or prevent holistically trained nutritionists from practicing. Liz helped connect individuals with attorneys and national organizations and recommended courses of action to those in need. She continues to contribute to NANP – most recently by sharing her knowledge of the legislative process with members in the Nourishing the Nutrition Professional teleconference.”

Sara received the GOING UP award:

“Sara Edison graduated from Bauman College in the spring of 2011 and has launched a private practice called A Stone’s Throw to Health. She also has a BS in Exercise Science from Skidmore College. In addition to starting her own practice, Sara is working with a colleague to build The Scoby Collective. This group is bringing together nutrition professionals interested in working collaboratively, i.e. peer to peer mentorships, sharing communal workspaces, and organizing informal gatherings to build nutrition knowledge and help recent graduates build confidence.

I plan to continue making an impact and sharing my food mood message! I know Liz well and I know she will continue to be a mentor and be of service!  She has always inspired me!  I have not met Sara and look forward to meeting her and watching her continue on her upward path leading people to optimal health!
