GABA, toxins, hormones, autoimmunity – encore of The Diabetes Summit

TRUDY SCOTT, CN: Understanding Anxiety: The Connection to Diabetes

We may need to look at low serotonin as well because we’ve got two kinds of anxiety when it comes to neurotransmitters, the low GABA, which is the physical anxiety, and the low serotonin, which is more the ruminating thoughts, the worry in the head, the reprocessing, the negative self-talk. So we often have low GABA, and we often have low serotonin as well. And both of those have a corresponding amino acid that helps to raise it. With low GABA we use GABA. With low serotonin we use tryptophan or 5-HTP. And we’re going talk about that one in a second. But the interesting thing is I was really excited to see that there’s some really new research on how GABA has some pretty promising benefits in terms of diabetes support as well.

This aspect of why we eat is seldom addressed and it’s profound:

I’d like to add that while I respect Dr. Kahn’s cardiology diet expertise, I am an advocate of quality animal protein and have found that many people with anxiety and depression typically don’t do very well on a vegan diet. His discussion was professional and very respectful and I do wholeheartedly agree with this:

I think whether grass fed beef, free range, omega 3 rich eggs are healthy or not, and that’s probably not possible to solve that question completely, the data’s here, there, or frankly there’s not enough data, just always add these organic brightly colored fruits and vegetables to whatever you’re eating

He also acknowledged Dr. Hyman’s coining of the term, the Pegan diet, which combines the best of a Paleo and vegan diet saying

It’s a useful term. It’s another way to say eat a very clean, very vegetable rich diet with a little wiggle room [i.e. the addition of quality animal protein]

We really do need a study comparing a real foods diet with feedlot meat and farmed fish – with a real foods diet with grass-fed meat and wild fish!

  • The true definition of gluten is that it is a large family of storage proteins found in all forms of grain, including rice, corn, and many others. The bottom line is this: the majority of gluten-sensitive people who eliminate only wheat, barley, rye, and oats but continue to consume other grains don’t get better!
  • only one protein, gliadin, found in wheat, barley, and rye, has been extensively studied. Each grain has one or more types of gluten proteins. A recent study identified four hundred new forms of gluten, forty of which were more damaging than the form of gluten for which doctors most commonly test
  • Research shows that corn (and corn oil) also produces numerous intestinal and health problems for the gluten sensitive

We covered the fascinating topic of leaky brain on our interview and Dr. Osborne covers it in great detail in the book. Here is a snippet from the book:

Now that you are familiar with leaky gut and understand the interconnected relationship of your brain and your GI tract, let me introduce the concept of leaky brain. Research on gluten sensitivity has identified this syndrome and revealed a connection between gluten-induced leaky gut and leaky brain, confirming the far-reaching effects of gluten on many diseases. Leaky brain means that the blood-brain barrier is breached, just as the gut walls can be breached by damage inflicted by grain. The blood-brain barrier is designed to keep toxic compounds out of the brain’s blood supply, so its disruption could lead to a battery of different neurological and mental symptoms. In addition to schizophrenia, gluten-induced damage can create other neurological problems, including depression, bipolar disease, seizure disorders (epilepsy), facial palsies such as Bell’s palsy, ADD/ADHD, and autism and others [like anxiety – this is my addition]. You could be gluten sensitive and have leaky brain syndrome.

The Anxiety Summit – Grainflammation – How Grain Consumption Contributes to Anxiety and other Mood Disorders

Dr. Peter Osborne DC, author of Glutenology, was interviewed on the Anxiety Summit by host of the Anxiety Summit, Trudy Scott, Food Mood Expert and Nutritionist, author of The Antianxiety Food Solution.

Grainflammation – How Grain Consumption Contributes to Anxiety and other Mood Disorders

Here are some snippets from our interview:

Gluten is notorious for damaging the gastrointestinal tract.  I know iron, in the literature,  has always been reported as the most common most deficiency in gluten sensitivity. In my 15 years of practice, measuring both ferritin as well as iron panels and vitamin B12 levels, I see B12 being much, much more common as a deficiency in those with gluten sensitivity. The most common side effect of B12 deficiency, beyond fatigue, is actually anxiety.

We discussed the work of Dr Alessio Fasano, world-renowned pediatric gastroenterologist, research scientist and entreprenuer,  chief of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition at MassGeneral Hospital for Children (MGHfC).

The second barrier is called the right junction, which we know gluten can cause a disruption in tight junctions. This was discovered by Alessio Fasano at Harvard. He actually discovered it while he was at University of Maryland Celiac Research Facility. He discovered these tight junctions were disrupted and dismantled as a result of gluten exposure.

We also know bacterial infections can disrupt these barriers. We also have some evidence that show that glyphosate in Roundup and other chemical artificial pesticides and herbicides can disrupt this gastrointestinal barrier.

We discussed lipopolysaccharides (LPS) and how they

can create a lot of inflammatory reaction, and they can contribute to a breakdown in the blood brain barrier

Here is a recent paper on LPS and anxiety and depression: Early prenatal exposure to LPS results in anxiety- and depression-related behaviors in adulthood

We found that mice exposed to LPS show anxiety- and depression-related behaviors

In addition, LPS mice had reduced serotonin and noradrenaline levels in the hippocampus

The corn zein discussion was fascinating and concerning because so many people are eating gluten-free products that contain corn (another reason to pass on the processed gluten-free products and just eat real whole food!)

Here are two papers that discuss this (corn is called maize in South Africa)

  • Maize prolamins resistant to peptic-tryptic digestion maintain immune-recognition by IgA from some celiac disease patients
  • Maize prolamins could induce a gluten-like cellular immune response in some celiac disease patients.
