BPA Exposure: Anxiety, depression and hyperactivity in children

September 21, 2016 By Trudy Scott 10 Comments

bpa-exposure

BPA is a chemical that’s found in hard plastics. And it behaves in a very similar way to estrogen and other hormones in the body. And because of this it’s called an endocrine disrupter. And we may find it in water bottles and it’s actually found in baby bottles as well. Interestingly enough, it’s found in dental fillings and sealants and other dental devices. And it’s used as a coating inside food containers and drink cans. So it’s very prevalent. It’s also used on receipts. So we are exposed to it in many different ways. And unfortunately children and babies are especially sensitive to the effects of BPA.

These are snippets from my response to questions Dr. Jay Davidson asks me during my interview on the Detox Project (an online summit) which runs Sept 26 to October 3: can we start talking about neuroendocrine and the toxic effects of maybe something like BPA, Bisphenol A? What is it? Where is it found? And then of course you’re the anxiety expert, so how does that even tie into anxiety as a chemical?

There have been a number of papers that look at the direct effects of a chemical such as BPA on anxiety. And there was a paper actually published earlier this year in March. And it was titled “Bisphenol A Exposure and Children’s Behavior: A Systematic Review.” And what that means is they’re looking at the results of a number of papers. And I’ll just read a few quotes here from the paper.

“We concluded original studies reporting on the association between prenatal and childhood BPA exposure.”

So they’re looking at exposure to BPA before the child is even born. They found that prenatal exposure was related to high levels of anxiety, depression, aggression, and hyperactivity in children. Think about how many kids are put on ADHD medications. Maybe it’s an issue simply because they were exposed to BPA before they were even born.

They also found that BPA exposure in childhood was associated with high levels of anxiety, depression, hyperactivity, and attention problems.

So we’ve got to really look at the chemicals and see is that causing some of these problems. And so it’s always getting back to the root cause and not necessarily thinking, “Well, we need to go ahead and medicate right away.”

I also cover why BPA-free is no longer an option, what to use instead of plastic, the effects of pesticides in our foods and the toxicity of benzodiazepines. My interview is called: Toxicity of Benzodiazepine Medication for Anxiety.

Detoxify your body to aid in prevention of – and possibly overcome – chronic illnesses! The unhealthy amounts of chemicals and toxins in our bodies are causing tremendously negative consequences! Let’s overcome this crisis! I hope you can join us to hear the many topics being covered:

    Hi Trudy,
Hope it’s okay I ask on off topic question. Thank you for your work! My son is 19 and suffers with Depersonalization and has for the past 4 years. It’s so intense and we have tried lots of supplements plus therapy plus other energy healing modalities. so far nothing seems to shift it…..do you have any past articles on this or any ideas/resources? Thank you thank you!

This is not my area of expertise but as I do with any condition I just looked at the research and found plenty that would indicate that looking at nutrition, biochemistry, toxin exposure, stress/burnout and medication side effects would be worth investigating.

Here are a few I found
      • Burnout in nurses https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26665491
      • independently associated with hypertension, diabetes mellitus, chronic pulmonary disease, severe pain, and childhood adversities https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19597357
      • antibiotic use https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26955658 and https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/14746427

I’d suspect that BPA and other environmental toxins like mercury may be a factor too, plus Lyme disease and other infections.

Also, my book “The Antianxiety Food Solution” (http://amzn.to/2czGd7Z) received this review earlier this year:

“Amazing effects! I’ve been suffering from anxiety and agoraphobia (with derealization at times) for a few months now, and the suggestions from this book has worked wonders for me! I mainly just followed the tips from chapter 2 i.e. eat every 2-3 hours to help maintain blood sugar levels and to eat enough portions of veggies, fruits etc, have a good breakfast and take multivitamins and it helped keep me much more grounded. My anxiety has almost vanished in just about a week or so!
I would recommend you to use this book as a complement to whatever therapy you’re using and it’s sure to give you a huge boost.”

I had no idea how prevalent it is so thanks for asking the question – I now know more than I did before you asked. I’d appreciate hearing from you what his symptoms are and if anxiety is also an issue? And what you have tried? This will help me understand it even more

Wow, thank you Trudy, so appreciate your attention to this. I’ve learned so much myself about Depersonalization/Derealization. Yes, he’s had intense social anxiety for about 5 years now….just recently he is doing so much better with this. He has learned how to get on top of it and he’s making huge breakthroughs. I know he was hoping the DP would subside as well, and I think it’s a little bit better. He has a super clean diet, no gluten or dairy or sugar, caffeine…organic, etc. He has been taking gaba for about a month. Over the years he’s taken many supplements without seeing any change. He still takes some but I think he’s not as disciplined currently b/c he hasn’t seen a difference up until now. thank you again so much!

What brand of water do you buy to avoid BPA in plastic containers (and the fluoride in tap water)?

    Hi Trudy,

I hope you don’t mind me asking you an off topic question. I recently got your book after hearing of you on a podcast. It was great and very easy to read!

I purchased the book to see if there was anything in there that I could try to improve/overcome my long-term struggle with anxiety/panic and OCD.

The amino acids are very intriguing, and I’d like to see if they will work for me. I took the questionnaires and got at least 3 symptoms for GABA, Serotonin, Catecholamines AND endorphins!

Respectfully, I’m also a little skeptical, due to the amount of money I’ve spent on treatments, professionals and bogus methods in the past with little or no success. My concern that this may be a placebo effect? Or the efficacy of crossing the blood brain barrier?

But I am still open minded, and will never give up to reach my dreams and would like to try some of your suggestions, specifically the amino’s.

I’d love to be able to make an appointment with you but I understand you are not taking on any clients at the moment. But I’m desperate, and was wondering if you could recommend someone that does similar work to yourself that I could contact for help?

Thanks in advance, and I look forward to hearing from you.

It’s understandable to be skeptical if you’ve tried so much. I encourage you to check out other articles and the comments on the blog – here is a good one with plenty of feedback on GABA https://www.everywomanover29.com/blog/gaba-calming-amino-acid-products-results/

I don’t know of practitioners in Australia who do what I do. I do have a waiting list https://www.everywomanover29.com/services.html and will be ramping up my online clinic in the next few months and doing practitioner training in 2017 (so will have people I can refer to)

If you’re not confident/comfortable trialing some of the amino acids on your own I’d recommend making the food changes now – real food, no gluten, no sugar, no caffeine, eating for blood sugar control.

Keep in mind that anxiety/panic/OCD can have many possible underlying causes https://www.everywomanover29.com/blog/60-nutritional-biochemical-causes-of-anxiety/

Hey Trudy, thank you very much for your comprehensive and prompt reply!

I will have a good look through the articles.

Yeah, I’m already on the waiting list, and can’t wait! 😉 I want to travel! Haha

That’s unfortunate that you don’t know of anyone who does what you do in Australia, but I’m sure a nutritionist/naturopath will understand. I’m currently seeing a nutritionist who is studying naturopathy as well.

He has me on a trial at the moment of Vitamin B12, NAC and Magnesium, as well as a paleo diet and to keep away from sugar to clean up strep in my gut.

But I find it REALLY hard to not have something sweet in the afternoon and at night after dinner. It’s a habit, and something that my family has been doing for many years. I’m usually very strong when it comes to restrictions, but over the last 8 or so months I’m finding myself more and more relying on ice-cream/chocolate to fill a void – very unlike me.

Lastly, no I’m confident in trialing my own amino acids, I just got a bit worried when I read the chapter on amino acids and medication. I’m currently taking a high dose (150mg) of Zoloft for OCD/anxiety and read that it’s not good to use amino’s with meds?

        Thanks again Trudy

PS do I purchase any brand for the amino’s?

Hey Pixi, thank you for your suggestion. Yes I’ve heard of them, but currently trialing other supps that a nutritionist has recommended I try. B12’s for MTHFR mutation, sugarless diet to clean up strep, NAC for the OCD, and Magnesium for….I can’t remember!

I might get in touch with them if what i’m doing has no effect.

        Thanks again.
