The Anxiety Summit: Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis and Anxiety

June 16, 2014 By Trudy Scott 12 Comments

izabella wentz 1

This is day 7 of the Anxiety Summit. Dr. Izabella Wentz – PharmD, author of Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis: Lifestyle Interventions for Finding and Treating the Root Cause is interviewed by host of the Anxiety Summit, Trudy Scott, Food Mood Expert and Nutritionist, author of The Antianxiety Food Solution.

Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis and Anxiety

  • Why hypothyroidism can sometimes feel like anxiety and the definition of autoimmunity
  • How common is it and an overview of the best testing
  • The role of the gut and food intolerances
  • The key nutrients: zinc, iodine, selenium and more

Here is a great gem from my interview with Izabella:

When the thyroid is attacked by the immune system like in Hashimoto’s it results in the breakdown of the thyroid tissue and thyroid hormones are rushed into the bloodstream, causing a transient overactive thyroid and anxiety symptoms.”

Remember that the thyroid needs to be functioning well for the amino acids to be effective.

I highly recommend Izabella’s book Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis: Lifestyle Interventions for Finding and Treating the Root Cause  and love Izabella’s great content-packed Facebook page Thyroid Lifestyle

The Anxiety Summit: How zinc and vitamin B6 prevent pyroluria and social anxiety

How zinc and vitamin B6 prevent pyroluria and social anxiety

– an interview with Trudy Scott, host of the Anxiety Summit (interviewer is Corey Schuler, who presents on Tuesday)

This interview was done on day 7 of The Anxiety Summit: Nutritional approaches for eliminating anxiety, social anxiety, panic attacks and OCD.

You can read/learn more about the summit in my opening talk/blog “Why the Anxiety Summit? Stats, trends and gems.”

Pyroluria/social anxiety

Low levels of the mineral zinc and vitamin B6 are frequently associated with a type of anxiety characterized by social anxiety, avoidance of crowds, a feeling of inner tension, and bouts of depression. People with this problem experience varying degrees of anxiety or fear, often starting in childhood, but they usually manage to cover it up. They tend to build their life around one person, become more of a loner over time, have difficulty handling stress or change, and have heightened anxiety symptoms when under more stress.

This constellation of symptoms is often the result of a genetic condition called pyroluria, also known as high mauve, pyrrole disorder, pyrroluria, pyrolleuria, malvaria, and elevated kryptopyrroles.

Here is the online version of the Pyroluria Questionnaire from The Antianixety Food Solution.

Be sure to read the comments for a wealth of information. You’ll see the dystonia question here.

If you need more information I have a whole chapter on pyroluria in my book:

The Antianxiety Food Solution: How the Foods You Eat Can Help You Calm Your Anxious Mind, Improve Your Mood and End Cravings (New Harbinger 2011).

  • The pyroluria chapter includes very detailed sections on the background, the questionnaire, testing and pyroluria supplement protocol.
  • It does not mention introversion, miscarriage and dystonia as these are new areas that I’m looking into

Here are other great books that also address pyroluria:

Joan Mathews Larson Depression Free Naturally

Carl Pfeiffer Nutrition and Mental Illness

Eva Edelman Natural Healing for Schizophrenia and Other Common Mental Disorders. As Corey said, this one is more for the practitioner.

The pyroluria-introversion connection

This is the blog post I wrote in response to the Huffington Post article, written by Carolyn Gregoire and called “23 Signs You’re Secretly An Introvert”

“Am I an anxious introvert because of low zinc and vitamin B6? My response to Huffington Post blog”

Be sure to check out the 23 signs and the responses from my wonderful followers.

I’d like to invite you to do both questionnaires and comment on the blog. Tell us that yes you are an introvert and yes you score over 15 on the pyroluria question or whatever the outcome is.

Pyroluria and fear of public speaking

Sontine is a client of mine who made diet changes, lifestyle changes like walking and added the key nutrients like zinc and vitamin B6 (and a few others) and found she too had no more fear of public speaking – and she actually started to really enjoy it! She also started to sleep well and had good energy. She was skeptical that this was possible for her but curiosity got the better of her and she’s so pleased with the results. Read more and watch her video testimonial here.

Do you have a fear of public speaking ? Did it improve when you addressed pyroluria? Please comment and let us know.

And here is the info about the zinc taste test and Kelly’s funny video! Enjoy

find that the majority of my clients with anxiety, pyroluria, depression and/or sugar and carb cravings are low in zinc. I have all my clients do the zinc status test when we start working together and then we retest their levels each week until they have good zinc levels. I use zinc sulfate, a liquid zinc that tastes a certain way depending on zinc levels. – See more at: https://www.everywomanover29.com/blog/zinc-deficiency-and-using-the-zinc-taste-test/#sthash.0hriWmqc.dpuf

The Anxiety Summit – Why? Stats, trends and gems

June 9, 2014 By Trudy Scott 57 Comments

top of the world

A very very big welcome to The Anxiety Summit day 1!! Nutritional approaches for eliminating anxiety, social anxiety, panic attacks and OCD.

These are the notes for day 1:

Trudy Scott’s talk: “Why the Anxiety Summit? Stats, trends and gems.” Air time is Monday June 9th at 9am PST to Tues June 10th at 8:59 am PST

This is what you’ll learn in the Anxiety Summit – how you can eliminate:

  • full blown anxiety, panic attacks, social anxiety, OCD, phobias
  • constant low grade fear, feelings of dread, the racing heart, the busy mind you can’t switch off and the ruminating thoughts
  • the constant worry, perfectionism, procrastination, the who-am-I-to-do-this or imposter syndrome

“You can and should feel on top of the world all the time!” ~ Trudy Scott, host of The Anxiety Summit and author of The Antianxiety Food Solution

Julia Ross, MFT – Pioneer in the field of Neuro-nutrient Therapy and the author of the best sellers The Mood Cure and The Diet Cure said this during our interview on “Eliminating Anxiety: Amino Acid Therapy and Adrenal Balancing”….

“On a scale of zero to ten, zero is not an unrealistic goal when it comes to anxiety. It’s really the human potential and GABA and tryptophan give us access to it”

(You can catch Julia’s interview on Friday June 13th. It will air between 9am and 8:59 am PST the next day).

One of the trends we are seeing: Teens are sad and stressed. Here is the Fairfax County Survey. Over 1/3 of seniors: “felt sad or hopeless during the previous year” + they “feel a lot of stress”

Another disturbing article is this one in Scientific American titled: Antianxiety Drugs Successfully Treat Autism

In this article in Scientific American earlier this year: Should Children Take Antipsychotic Drugs? the authors favor antipsychtic drugs because there are “no alternatives: for these kids,

I totally disagree and by the end of The Anxiety Summit you will agree that there are plenty of much better options like real whole food and nutrients and addressing food intolerances.  Another one is getting kids outdoors.  Here is the green spaces study I mentioned: Exposure to Neighborhood Green Space and Mental Health: Evidence from the Survey of the Health of Wisconsin

“Higher levels of neighborhood green space were associated with significantly lower levels of symptomology for depression, anxiety and stress, after controlling for a wide range of confounding factors.”

There are also these trends among college students. Here are some of the articles I mentioned: Anxiety rampant among college students

And this one in the San Jose Mercury news: Teen health: Depression, anxiety and social phobias rising in kids, educators say

These are the 2 events I mentioned, both of which are coming up soon:

MINDD International Forum 2014 – June 14-15 in Sydney Australia Brain Health for Mental Health, Concentration & IQ: Nutritional & Integrative Treatments for Children & Adults

Beat Anxiety Now Summit begins June 16 When I heard about this event I reached out to the organizer Katherine Johnston and we agreed to share each other’s summits. Do check it out! The focus seems to be more on therapy and behavioral approaches.

If you are not already registered for the Anxiety Summit you can get live access to the speakers of the day here www.theAnxietySummit.com

UPDATE: the summit concluded on Tues 6/24 – season 2 of The Anxiety Summit will be in November 2014. If you’d like to be on the notification list just sign up here www.theAnxietySummit.com

The Anxiety Summit day 1: stats and trends and reinventing psychiatry

June 6, 2014 By Trudy Scott 9 Comments

 anxiety-summit-affbanner

The Anxiety Summit kicks off next week with my introduction addressing: “Stats, trends and gems.” Get ready to hear some shocking trends that we are seeing in mental health!

One of them is: kids with autism are being prescribed benzodiazapines for their anxiety! This is truly shocking and is just one reason why we need nutritional solutions for anxiety, panic, social anxiety and OCD.

Our first expert is Dr. Kelly Brogan M.D., Holistic women’s health psychiatry. Our topic is “Misunderstood and Mistreated: Reinventing Psychiatry.” Here are a few gems she shared:

  • there are multiple root causes of mood disorders: low blood sugar and low thyroid issues, and food intolerances with inflammation playing a major role.
  • there is no clinically significant difference between SSRIs and placebo
  • women should not take statins – ever! (I wholeheartedly agree!)

We respectfully disagreed on the role of serotonin in anxiety and depression (she doesn’t believe low serotonin plays a role!). Hopefully we’ll be able to convince her one day.

Here is the incredible speaker line up and their topics – for the first week:

  • Dr. Felice Jacka, PhD, “The research: food for the treatment and prevention of anxiety and depression?”
  • Esther Blum RD, “How to Live Gorgeously and Rock Your Inner Cavegirl”
  • Julie Matthews, CNC, “BioIndividual Nutrition for Anxiety: How special diets and avoiding certain foods can support individuals with anxiety”
  • Mira Dessy, NE, “How additives in your food can make You anxious”
  • Amanda Swart, PhD, “Rooibos: a functional food in the management of stress”
  • Dr. Stephanie Seneff, PhD, “How aluminum and Glyphosate (Roundup) collaborate to cause anxiety, depression, autism and celiac disease”. I blogged about this last week and shared that:
    • “Deficiencies in tryptophan, tyrosine, methionine and selenomethionine associated with celiac disease, match glyphosate’s known depletion of these amino acids” … contributing to anxiety and depression.
  • Margaret Floyd, “Comfort food or sweet misery? How sugar controls your mood and how to get it out of your diet”
  • Julia Ross, MFT, “Eliminating Anxiety: Amino Acid Therapy and Adrenal Balancing”
  • Dr. Hyla Cass, MD, “The Addicted Brain and How to Break Free”
  • Dr. Josh Friedman, PsyD, “Integrative Psychotherapy: My Journey from Psychoanalysis to Whole Person Mental Health”
  • Trudy Scott, CN (yours truly!), “How zinc and vitamin B6 prevent pyroluria and social anxiety”
  • Dr. Anna Cabeca, DO, “The role of our hormones and neurotransmitters in anxiety”

Join us on The Anxiety Summit to hear 20+ experts share research, nutritional pearls, food advice and protocols.

The Anxiety Summit is a free online virtual event that runs June 9 to June 22 and will be bringing together experts from all over the world – to share nutritional approaches to end anxiety, social anxiety, panic attacks and OCD. Get access to the interviews here www.theanxietysummit.com

Anxiety: food based solutions with Trudy Scott on The Randy and Christa show

April 25, 2014 By Trudy Scott 7 Comments

I met Christa Orrechio at a conference earlier this year and was thrilled to be invited to speak on The Randy and Christa show. They are doing a fabulous job getting the wellness message out into the world! I also love how they have such fun doing this show!

During my segment we talked about the following:

  • Why read my book The Antianxiety Food Solution: if you’re stressed, have panic attacks, fears, phobias and even sugar cravings
  • “80-90% of my clients do better off gluten”
  • My client who went gluten-free: her eczema cleared up and she felt calmer
  • Amino acid supplements (like GABA and tryptophan) help you break the gluten addiction/craving
  • Low serotonin causes anxiety, sadness, excessive worry in the head, depression, afternoon and evening cravings, PMS, winter blues and sleep problems (see the whole questionnaire here)
  • Tryptophan (500mg is the starting dose) midafternoon and evening raises serotonin so you’ll feel calmer, hopeful and optimistic
  • Some people may do better on 5-HTP but it can raise cortisol levels
  • Too much of the amino acids can have a reverse effect – use what you need. You may need less than the starting dose
  • The amino acids are a short-term approach – you also need to be addressing diet and low blood sugar etc
  • Low GABA causes physical tension and anxiety (Randy finds GABA helps him sleep)
  • Caffeine is a problem for many people with anxiety – give it up! If it doesn’t make you anxious make sure it’s organic
  • Zinc and vitamin B6 are important for making GABA and serotonin
  • A good source of zinc and B6 is red meat. It’s also a good source of iron and omega-3s (as much omega3-s as salmon!). Of course it does need to be grass-fed!
  • The starting dose for vitamin B6 is 100mg
  • Magnesium is a calming mineral
  • Sign up for your free report “5 Simple Steps to Reduce Anxiety Now“

Be sure to listen to Randy and Christa when I drop off as they continue the discussion (12:30 minutes).

Regarding the red meat discussion they had a bit later, I’d like to add that I find many of my clients with mood issues – both anxiety and depression – do better with more red meat than just once or twice a week. Having it every day is just fine! As Christa said, it has all the amino acids to make our neurotransmitters/brain chemicals.

Christa Orecchio is a clinical and holistic nutritionist, and founder of The Whole Journey, a nutrition practice and informational website. She is on a mission to help as many people as possible to heal by addressing the root cause (and not just the symptom) of why they don’t feel good and concurrently teaches people how to use food as their medicine to heal their bodies so they can ultimately live a thriving, vibrant life.

Christa has a TV show on FOX in San Diego called “Food as Medicine” and is the co-host of her own nationally syndicated health talk show “The Randy and Christa Show”.
