Overcoming Monkey Mind in Experience Life magazine

March 22, 2013 By Trudy Scott 9 Comments

April Experience Life cover“Three experts offer tips for overcoming mental chaos and reclaiming a balanced brain.”

The first expert is Eric Maisel, PhD, psychotherapist, creativity coach, and author of 40 books, most recently Natural Psychology: The New Psychology of Meaning (Natural Psychology Press, 2012) recommends:

“monitoring your breathing and monitoring your thinking at the same time” as a “quick way to get centered and quiet monkey mind.”  He shares his 10-second technique.

The second expert is Henry Emmons, MD, integrative psychiatrist and author of The Chemistry of Calm: A Powerful, Drug-Free Plan to Quiet Your Fears and Overcome Your Anxiety (Touchstone, 2010) recommends:

reconnecting with your body by getting “out of your head and into your body.”  He suggests techniques like “placing your hand on your lap” and paying attention “to the feeling of warmth that’s exchanged between your hand and body” or simply listening to music

I was thrilled to be third expert and share tips for rebalancing your biochemistry and neurotransmitters…Trudy Scott, CN, nutritionist and author of The Antianxiety Food Solution: How the Foods You Eat Can Help You Calm Your Anxious Mind, Improve Your Mood, and End Cravings (New Harbinger, 2011)

I suggest the amino acid tryptophan and quality grass-fed red meat if low serotonin is the issue. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that “helps produce feelings of well-being and also helps you switch off worry and ruminating thoughts.”  I also recommend eating a protein-rich breakfast – something that is key for every one of my clients.”  If you experience “poor focus, scattered thoughts, ADD-type symptoms and fatigue” “the supplement to try is tyrosine.”

Have you been able to switch off monkey-mind with any of these tips?

You can read the whole article in the April 2013 edition of Experience Life magazine here   or pick up a physical copy from bookstores or grocery stores.

It’s a great magazine and I love this summary on the about page:  “Experience Life is your guide to a healthy way of life. Your road map toward real and lasting self-improvement. Your antidote to all the fuss and nonsense that dominates the vast majority of health and fitness publications. Because being healthy is a revolutionary act.”

Life and passion of nutritionist Bonnie Fisk-Haydon honored with student scholarship

April 26, 2012 By Trudy Scott 6 Comments

With my friend Bonnie is 2006
With my friend Bonnie in 2006

In order to honor the life and passion of my dear friend Bonnie Fisk-Haydon, I decided to set up a student scholarship for the 2012 National Association of Nutrition Professionals conference.

Bonnie passed away August 26, 2011 and was a very special friend to me (you can read my tribute to her here)

Bonnie was an amazingly passionate nutritionist who went back to nutrition school when she was in her 60s! She was very active in the NANP and served as a director on the board.

We met at the very first NANP conference in 2004 when she was still a student and I remember her saying “joining the NANP as a student was one of the best things I did for my nutrition business.”

So creating a student scholarship felt like a really good thing to do.

It is with great pleasure that I’d like to announce that the first Bonnie Fisk-Hayden Student Scholarship will be awarded to Kelly Marie Sullivan, NE and Bauman student.

In her application, Kelly said: “I wanted to obtain my NC Certificate before my 50th Birthday and l will! l just put my two sons through the California State College System and now it was my turn to experience learning on a formal level. It was finally my time to follow my heart, with my love of healthy nutritious foods to take on the level of formal learning. This is a whole new life/career path for me. I finally have time to pursue my passions”. Kelly has passed the NE Program at Bauman College and is currently enrolled in the NC Program and excited to complete in June. She adds: “I cannot wait to see what the NANP conference has to offer as I continue my path in nutritional wellness.”

Congratulations to Kelly! And thanks to everyone who applied!

I know Bonnie will be happy being remembered this way!

Update on 3/12/13:  It is with great pleasure that I’d like to announce that I have decided to offer this scholarship again in 2013.   Please share with interested students or apply if you are a student. Applications are due March 20.  You can apply here.

Antianxiety Food Solution Quotes

May 16, 2011 By Trudy Scott 7 Comments

Anti-AnxietyFoodSolution1.indd

Here are a selection of quotes and facts from each chapter of the book: The Antianxiety Food Solution: How The Foods You Eat Can Help You Calm Your Anxious Mind, Improve Your Mood and End Cravings.

Introduction: “There’s a reason why I’m so passionate about working with people with anxiety and why I’m writing this book. I’ve had my own personal journey with anxiety…” Chapter 1: Figure Out Your Optimum Antianxiety Diet There are 4 antianxiety diets but “Eating real, whole, good-quality food is the foundation of this book and any program to prevent and alleviate mental health issues such as anxiety….” Chapter 2: Avoid Sugar and Control Blood Sugar Swings “Sugar and alcohol may contribute to elevated levels of lactate in the blood, which can cause anxiety and panic attacks” Chapter 3: Avoid Caffeine, Alcohol, and Nicotine In a study, “…those with panic disorders experienced increases in symptoms such as nervousness, fear, nausea, heart palpitations, and tremors after consuming caffeine and said the effects were similar to how they felt during a panic attack…” Chapter 4: Address Problems with Gluten and Other Foods “Clinical experience and specific studies support the connection between gluten and anxiety, social phobia, depression, and even schizophrenia” Chapter 5: Improve Your Digestion “…people with digestive complaints such IBS, food allergies and sensitivities, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth and ulcerative colitis frequently suffer from anxiety and…depression.” Chapter 6: Balance Brain Chemistry with Amino Acids “GABA plays a major role in anxiety, and serotonin plays a role in at least some types of anxiety…. The great thing about supplementing with amino acids is that you’ll get immediate feedback: positive effects, adverse effects, or no changes at all.” Chapter 7: Address Pyroluria or Low Levels of Zinc and Vitamin B6 “Low levels of zinc and vitamin B6 are frequently associated with a type of anxiety characterized by social anxiety, avoidance of crowds, a feeling of inner tension, and bouts of depression” Chapter 8: Other Nutrients, Hormone Imbalances, Toxins, Medications, & Lifestyle Changes “Mild to moderate deficiency of vitamin C may be associated with increased nervousness and anxiety… Supplemental magnesium together with vitamin B6 was shown to alleviate anxiety-related premenstrual symptoms, as well as breast tenderness and menstrual weight gain…” As you can see, there are many factors that can affect how anxious you feel and since we are all biochemically unique it’s important to figure out and address what may be triggering your anxiety, mood issues and associated cravings. © 2011 Trudy Scott

Have fun exercising and prevent cancer

March 26, 2010 By Trudy Scott 20 Comments

It’s all over the news today – up to a third of breast cancer cases in Western countries could be avoided with a nutritious diet and exercise.  (This was announced at a conference in Spain this week – http://tinyurl.com/yalf9s7 for the full story.)

Wow that is so powerful!  We do have control over our own health.

How much time do you make for exercise?

Do you get too busy to go to the gym?

Do you find that you force yourself to go because you know you should?

Do you watch the clock and wish away the time when you’re at the gym?

If exercise is a chore, find something fun to do and it will be a totally different experience I promise. You’ll get so much more out of it and will want to keep going back for more.  Take up ballroom dancing, do belly-dancing lessons (maybe not if you’re a guy!), start playing tennis again or try something fun and new. This last summer we took windsurfing lessons and it was a total blast.

The windy season is just starting again and we were out on the local lake on Saturday and I could have stayed out all day. Exercise, healthy, laughter, fresh air, sunshine, companionship and most of all – pure fun! Now that is what exercise should be!  Get out here and have fun ok?

have fun and exercise

Exercise, Food and Vital Nutrients for a Great Mood

March 3, 2010 By Trudy Scott 15 Comments

I’m thrilled to be presenting on this very important topic on Saturday March 6, at the 80th State Conference of CAHPERD (California Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance).  The conference runs from March 4-7, 2010 in Ontario, CA.

It’s quite incredible how you can eliminate anxiety, depression, mood swings, irritability, low self-esteem and so many more mood issues – with a combination of exercise, eating real (nutrient-dense) foods and targeted individualized supplementation with the amazing amino acids and other vital nutrients.

Here’s a sampling of some of the information I’ll be sharing:

  • Adult rates of depression & anxiety have tripled since 1990
  • Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S
  • In the U.S. one in ten children and adolescents suffer from mental illness
  • Exercise has a significant therapeutic benefit as it raises endorphins and serotonin
  • Aerobic and non-aerobic exercise helps, so walking, yoga and swimming are all great
  • Eating a good wholesome diet is imperative.  See my posting on the benefits of a Mediterranean Diet on depression
  • Refined sugar strips us of crucial nutrients like B vitamins and zinc, all of which are so important for mental health
  • Gluten intolerance can cause anxiety, depression and schizophrenia, and not only digestive problems
  • Supplementing with the amino acid tryptophan can help with depression, anxiety, PMS, low self-esteem, afternoon cravings and sleep problems
  • Extreme shyness and social phobia can often be corrected with therapeutic levels of zinc and vitamin B6

For more details on this conference and information on CAHPERD here is their site http://www.cahperd.org/conference/index.html
