The Anxiety Summit: GABA, magnesium, pyroluria and digestive issues

June 19, 2014 By Trudy Scott 15 Comments

This is day 12 of the Anxiety Summit.  Host of the Anxiety Summit, Trudy Scott, Food Mood Expert and Nutritionist, author of The Antianxiety Food Solution, interviews two clients who saw transfromational changes in their mood and anxiety when they made food changes, added in nutrients, addressed digestive issues and food intolerances.

carolyn gard client story

Client success story: Carolyn Gard

GABA and magnesium helped her feel calmer, the amino acids have helped with her sugar cravings and she wishes she had known about pyroluria, introversion and social anxiety when she was at college

Here is a great gem from my interview with Carolyn. We were talking about GABA, the main calming neurotransmitter and amino acid. She said it:

makes me feel very calm and focused no matter what I’m doing. I feel like I’m on a real calm, peaceful cruise control.”

sophia elizabeth client story

Client success story: Sophia Elizabeth Archambault

Sophia Elizabeth struggled with chronic sadness and an eating disorder, and now she has resilience, balance and lives happily on a farm with her husband, 3 dogs and 10 goats. She found solutions by addressing food sensitivities, pyroluria and digestive issues.

Here is a great gem from my interview with Sophia Elizabeth.  We were talking about the value of keeping a food mood log:

And then you note with each meal or each beverage how you’re feeling, or the various things you notice in shifts of mood or sensations in the body. And it’s all there in black and white. It’s sort of like using your own body as research.”

Both Carolyn and Elizabeth did better with nutrients for pyroluria.  Here is the pyroluria questionnaire we discussed.

I can’t tell you how much I have enjoyed the anxiety summit so far. I have learned so much about myself and natural ways to treat my issues. Thank you so much Trudy for putting this summit on!

This summit has been most enlightening, Trudy, and has boosted my hope & determination that I too will eventually enjoy better health – with the assistance of the right professional who understands “wholism.”
I think there is a large cohort of suffering survivors of cancer TREATMENT, with multi-system problems who may benefit from this cutting edge information.
After all, pyoluria seems to be risk for cancer as well.

    Hi Trudy,
thanks for hosting this conference. I have had time to listen to a few episodes. I am struggling with what direction/step to take next. I have OCD and have struggled off and on since my early 20’s or late teens. I have used SSRI’s off and on. I am now 40. Anxiety is rampant in my family. I love to read and learn and in my mind am determined that an SSRI is not the solution; however, they seem to have given me relief. For the last few years I have tried aminos and supplements without noticing much change. I finally began another SSRI (despite want I wanted to do) but had to stop due to a rash that developed – the SSRI was helping but I wasn’t free of my ocd – I was up to a very high dose. I have been off it for quite awhile and am still struggling with the rash. I am currently taking b-6, inositol, tryptophan, calc/mag, glycine (has helped my sleep tremendously), vit c, and choline but am receiving little relief. I was diagnosed with pyroluria but the supplements didn’t help. We did the GAPS diet a few years ago for about 6 months (I know that’s not long enough) and it seemed to help. I just don’t feel I have the gumption to do it again. We eat really well – although I do struggle with sugar. I am trying not to eat wheat as I do sometimes (not often). Usually the only dairy we eat is homemade kefir, sometimes store bought yogurt, and hard cheeses. I had a food sensitivity test done a few years ago and my list was not huge. After listening to a thyroid summit it seems that my numbers may be a little high (I was borderline and did some supplements that helped bring the numbers down). I am pretty sure that my adrenals are tired. With the MTHFR I have one mutation. According to my research if you have OCD you should avoid folate (can’t remember which form) and B-12(I think this if right). I am not fully functioning and its hard on my family. I am not asking you to help me with this info. It’s just hard to know where to go for help next as supplements are costly and doctors/nutritionists outside of insurance are costly as well. It’s hard to spend more money when you do not know if it will help. I have listened to Dr Schuler and Dr Greenblatt and it seems that they could be helpful. You also seem to have a broad knowledge base. Can you suggest a possible next step? Thanks for your time!

      Hi Daniel
I’m so glad you’ve able to listen to some of the summit interviews. You have a lot going on and it seems you have tried many approaches. I can’t offer any specific advice here except to say that I suggest working with a practitioner like Dr Schuler or Dr Greenblatt or myself. I commend you for all that you have tried but it’s challenging to try and do it alone. As you heard from Dr Greenblatt the OCD could be due to a strep antibodies and you would need to be assessed for this.

You mention your period so hormonal factors may need to be addressed – sex hormones and adrenals.

I don’t think you can make such a broad statement as this: “if you have OCD you should avoid folate and B-12”

This is big and I’d pursue this: “We did the GAPS diet a few years ago for about 6 months (I know that’s not long enough) and it seemed to help.” – always continue with what is working!

I am pleased your sleep seems to be good!

Very encouraging stories from Carolyn and Elizabeth…and well done for their commitment to a brighter future.
All the speakers have been fantastic and the information invaluable.
Listening to all the speakers does give us hope that we can find holistic answers when the conventional doctors have no more answers.
Just waiting for your book and Julia’s to come – so that I can look in more detail. And Dr Hyla’s ebook has been great – with the questionnaires.
The questionnaires are a wonderful tool – as I’ve forgotten what ‘normal’ is – some of the symptoms I thought were just part of an ageing life….perhaps can be altered.
And I do feel you are correct – finding the right person to work with ‘on the journey’ is so important.
Your enthusiasm throughout the interviews has been ‘wonderful’ and ‘amazing’. You must be thrilled with the response. Looking forward to Summit 2…!

      Hi Carole
Thanks for your lovely feedback! I am blown away with the response (and a bit saddened about the fact that so many people are struggling to find answers)

And yes, we need that hope and then the tools to turn things around. Glad you now know what normal is.
      See ya on summit 2

Thanks so much for the thyroid summit. I found out about it when it was already half way done but heard most of the replays so that was great. There’s so much to know, it feels a little overwhelming but we just need to take one step at a time. It’s so unfortunate that the majority of psychiatrists don’t do any testing and just prescribe heavy duty meds. I went through a hell of a time getting off the SSRI med…did it so slowly over a 6 month period, literally emptying the capsule a couple of grains at a time and still had withdrawal symptoms. They say SSRI’s are not addictive, not sure what they call all the withdrawal symptoms if they say they’re not addictive. I did it so slowly because the time before I went off them I went through hell and was convinced by my psychiatrist to go back on so the next time I made sure I did it very slowly. The SSRI’s did not work for me. It didn’t help OCD – it basically just numbed me so I felt like I didn’t care. They at me on extremely high doses because when I wasn’t getting results they just kept saying I needed a higher dose and just kept increasing until I was way above the highest recommended dose. They also wanted to add other psych meds which I refused and the doctor was very derogatory with me. At first the SSRIs increased anxiety and was told that can happen at the beginning then they basically just numbed me out and felt like I was in a constant daze, gained over 50 lbs, developed diabetes, increased cholesterol, hypothyroidism, peripheral neuropathy, asthma, chronic fatigue, etc. Felt like I was dying a slow death so I took myself off them without the help of my doctor. So glad I went off them. It’s a slow road back to health but I’m hopeful especially after the summit…so glad to have the support and information that most psychiatrists don’t offer. Would love to find a doctor like Dr Greenblatt. Thank you all so much for the wonderful work you’re all doing and all the people that are being helped! Blessings to you Trudy and all that were involved with the anxiety summit.

I am sorry you have had such a tough time with all this.

I am so glad you have hope and now resources. I’m going to be gathering some resources so you can find doctors and practitioners like these speakers.

        Hi Mary
I don’t know that Joanne will see this and respond so I’ll share what I do with my clients. I have them talk to their doctor about wanting to do a taper and add in tryptophan – and get the approval and taper protocol (which should be very slow). Then they work with me on raising serotonin with the amino acid tryptophan (plus addressing other factors that contribute to anxiety and depression: real food, adrenals, digestion, blood sugar, gluten etc). Then a month or so later they may start the SSRI taper.
        Hope this helps

    Hi Trudy,

Thank you so much for putting on the anxiety summit! I feel like i might have a few new leads to try and get my health figured out. I have reason to believe I may have pyroluria, I just had my third baby and I am breastfeeding, should I wait til I’ve weaned my son before beginning the Zinc and B6 to avoid “copper dumping” negatively affecting baby??

      Hi Hannah
You’re so welcome! None of these have been tested during pregnancy or breastfeeding so it’s best to wait.

That being said, high copper can contribute to severe psychosis and in this case I’d suggest that someone works with a knowledgeable practitioner and do as much testing as possible before supplementing.

This is always a tough call as I feel having a happy calm mom is better for the baby and I am not in favor of mood medications during this time.

Thanks Trudy! I appreciate you getting back to me:)

I have been able to “manage” since childhood without medications. I do best on a gluten free and mostly grain free, dairy free, soy free, sugar free, and caffeine free diet. (augh)

I will hold off supplementing with the B6 and Zinc. sadly finding a practitioner is out of the question due to finances but with continued research, hopefully going it solo will work!

    Thanks again, God bless!!
