The Role of Inflammation in Stress, Anxiety and Depression

“Inflammation: The Fire Within” is the theme of the annual conference of the Nutritional Therapy Association. It will be held in Vancouver, WA on March 15, 16, 17. I’m thrilled to presenting on Friday from 10-11:30am and my topic is “The Role of Inflammation in Stress, Anxiety and Depression.”

This presentation will provide health and nutrition professionals with current, evidence-based information the role of inflammation in stress, and on anxiety and mood disorders. It will explain:

  • the negative impact of pro-inflammatory junk food, trans fats, feed-lot meat, pesticides, gluten, fructose and caffeine on stress, anxiety and depression
  • the recent research supporting the anti-inflammatory benefits of real whole food, the Mediterranean diet (for both reducing inflammation and reducing and preventing depression, fish and fish oils (with some exceptions), dark chocolate (with some caveats), probiotics, zinc and vitamin B6
  • the links between social stress and inflammation
  • the effects of maternal inflammation on anxiety and social behavior of offspring
  • the links between pyroluria (see the pyroluria questionnaire here), social anxiety and oxidative stress
  • how inflammation leads to low serotonin and mood issues

It’s quite incredible how much of an impact inflammation has on mood disorders and how simply taking steps to lower inflammation can have a positive impact. What is equally fascinating is that so many of the foods and nutrients that eliminate anxiety and depression also lower inflammation! The body is quite amazing in its ability to heal when provided with the correct nutrients!

I will also be exhibiting and will have delicious 100% certified Organic Tulsi Teas donated by Organic India and great for stress-relief and you guessed it… inflammation! Do come and try some yummy lemon-ginger or licorice or find some in your local grocery store. We’ll also do zinc status testing because zinc is key for alleviating anxiety, stress and depression. These amino acids also help with inflammation!

    Before I created a healing modality (first to heal myself), I suffered from all sorts of inflamation. Whew! It was exhausting to have those fires burning in my body all the time. It is amazing to have this reminder of inflamtion and to give me the opportunity to do a little “inflamation audit” and to realize: NONE!!! I am inflamation-free!! YAY!     Hello Trudy

    I would like to ask about severe depression on kidney infection and UTI.
    Ive been getting weaker for about month before getting more clear symptoms and also slightly depressed with halitosis I thought it was because of particularly bad pollen season but then Ive started to get feeling of severe depression, low grade fever, peeing a lot, bad breath, kidney pain and inflammation with suicidal painful depression symptom, short memory, cognitive issues and difficulty concentrating. I knew it was because of bacterial infection.
    Ive tested positive for higher albumin urine test with paper sticks
    At first doctor put me on tea with goldenrod, hibiscus and cranberries but I was not getting better Ive tried tea tree oil 4 pills daily for last 4 days and it was better even depression and fatigue but only to certain point.
    But Ive started to feel stuck today TTO treatement did not feel like it was progressing anymore and with MCAS it felt like I was reacting to tea for infection.
    I was bit also more depressed today it feels so inflamed on back of my head.
    Im always taking for my MCAS and hashi my seeking health probiotics, quercetin, vitamin D and C, carnitine, fresh ginger, magnesium 800mg, iron, B vitamins B2, B3, B6 as P5P and B12, zinc, selenium, medicinales mushrooms, progesterone bioidentical, black seed oil, tyrosine 1gr in the morning, zyrtek and thyroid medications.
    5HTP gives me lot od new phobia and Ive tried tryptophane and dlpa and inositol and it feels like it makes inflammation worst.
    Im gluten/ dairy/soy/nuts free and lowish histamine diet.
    Any tips were to start?

    Thank you so much for any advice.
    We moved to Czech republic for husbands job and Ive no idea who to see even through skype to work on more root causes.

      Sorry you’re not well. When someone has a kidney infection and UTI looking for advice on blogs and forums is not recommended. This requires medical attention and if someone doesn’t have a naturopath/herbalist they are working with is often a time for antibiotics (as much as I am not a fan of them). I advise my clients to avoid Cipro (and other fluoroquinolones) and use probiotics during and after. If the person has a naturopath/herbalist there are some natural herbals that may be effective.

      An infection can trigger depression because of the inflammation. In this instance the amino acids may not help (it looks like you’ve noticed this)
