Dr. Mark Hyman’s Broken Brain 2: mold toxicity, the heart-brain connection, genetics, inspiration and more

Dr. Mark Hyman has done it again with a powerful all-new online docuseries called Broken Brain 2: The Body-Mind Connection as a follow-up to his very popular earlier online docuseries. Some of the big topics that are covered mycotoxins and mold toxicity, the heart-brain connection, the role of genetics and your environment and of course diet and lifestyle.

In the first episode, Dr. Hyman shares his own and very recent personal story with mold toxicity,  how it damaged his brain and how he recovered:

My mold toxicity started off as a cough I just couldn’t kick. After seeing several doctors (something even a doctor has to do sometimes!) I was advised that it could be mold. My house was the prime suspect and my hunch was right, and so began the process of healing my body and gutting my home. I was at one point so sick I couldn’t get out of bed; my mind and body felt like they were failing me and I was desperate to feel like myself again.

In a later episode, Dr. Hyman also shares how the connection between the heart and brain is a great example of the body’s interconnectedness at work:

People often think the brain is the one sending signals to the heart, instructing it to pump blood throughout the body. But there is much more to the story. The heart actually sends MORE signals to the brain than the other way around. The rhythm of the heart is extremely influential—it can signal a state of calm or one of stress, which the nervous system and brain register and share with the rest of the body.

That means your emotional and physical experiences all tie back to the rhythm of the heart. When we’re in a chronic state of stress, that disordered heart rate becomes our norm, and the amygdala gets familiar with it; the brain actually gets comfortable with it and sees it as our baseline.

For this reason, heart rate variability, or HRV, can be used as a dynamic tool to reset our heart-brain connection. We want to strive for a state of coherence—a smooth wave pattern in heart rate variability over time. This coherence is a reflection of a balance between the parasympathetic or relaxation nervous system and our sympathetic nervous system, which is the fight or flight system.

Coherence is the natural state of feeling good and it sends the most beneficial signals to the brain; it actually means we are able to send more information through the vagus nerve to the brain and when we’re in this state frequently it sets a new baseline, one that keeps the body relaxed, enhances cognition, and keeps our physiology balanced.

The powerful evidence behind the heart-brain connection has given birth to a concept called HeartMath, a methodology that assesses HRV and encourages self-regulation practices to promote heart-brain coherence for optimal health.

Dr Hyman and the experts will be doing a deep dive into HeartMath and the importance of the heart-brain connection in Broken Brain 2: The Body-Mind Connection.

Here are some gems and inspiration from a few of the 70 health experts you can expect to learn from in the docuseries.

Dr. Chris Kresser on mitochondrial dysfunction and chronic disease….

Dr. Ben Lynch on our genes and the environment …

And some inspiration from Dr. Ann Shippy during her discussion on mold toxicity and brain health …

I am privileged and honored to have a very small cameo section in the docuseries!

Here is some of my advice to find something you love to do and have fun…

And my closing words of wisdom about hope and finding your unique root cause …

I really enjoyed the first series Dr. Hyman put together and bought the package. How will it work this time around? Also, not much is considered about those who have Down Syndrome. With genetic testing and all this other new information, have they found some specific tests/ markers that can help such ones to improve in their cognitive, behavior and speaking abilities? The 8 yr. old I work with showed a big decline in these areas and I suspected foods may be the issue. Low and behold they recently discovered she has celiac! She is getting a biopsy tomorrow. I loaned my books to the parents: “No Grain No Pain” by Peter Osborn; “Autoimmune Fix” and “You Can Fix Your Brain” by Tom O’Bryon, so they could have some knowledge to ask the doctors more specific questions and be aware of some things they may encounter on their journey. The girl has some anxiety, OCD, and stemming behaviors (running objects through her fingers: plastic linking chains, cards, crayons, etc. & grinding her teeth). I am hopeful changing her diet will help but am concerned about her thyroid. What are the numbers to look for in children for optimal range and is there a good study to refer to for the parents to refer the doctor to? Thank you for the opportunity to ask.

I understand the format for both the first series and this one will be similar – 8 episodes of 1 to 1.5 hours with one episode per day open for online viewing and then the option to purchase the 8 episodes plus the full length interviews of each speaker/expert (on various formats i.e. online/digital and memory stick/DVD). Glad to hear you really enjoyed the first one!

I don’t believe Down Syndrome is covered specifically in Broken Brain 2 but as you say many of the same functional medicine and nutritional approaches can be used based on specific symptoms. How wonderful that you helped uncover that your client/patient has celiac. It’s actually suggested that everyone with Down Syndrome be screened (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28798921).

We know celiac disease can impact thyroid health so screening for this is also important. There are a number of studies showing hypothyroidism is common. Here is one https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/30210717. There are lab ranges for children.

Identifying all nutritional deficiencies is key as leaky gut and malabsorption is likely a factor. Low zinc, low iron and low serotonin are all common with celiac/gluten issues and could well be a factor in her anxiety, OCD, and stemming behaviors. While figuring all this out I like to use the amino acids for immediate relief and starting to address low serotonin and low GABA right away.

I know you’ll be getting plenty of additional insights during Broken Brain 2. Enjoy!

Cannabis now can be the next Alternative medicine that can relief pains, lessen the seizures and can be infused in your dishes, I tried frozen yogurt infused cannabis before and it really tastes good! and now, there’s new and something interesting! On the other hand, Ingesting Cannabis has a side effect that can lead you addiction because of its high dosage that you’ll never know how much dosage that food has.

Do you happen to know which episode? I was so looking forward to #3 but I ran out if time to watch it. I use CBD from hemp. It only has a trace amount of THC, so nothing about is addictive nor will it get my high. Almost all of my chronic pain is gone as well as my anxiety. It’s been nothing short of a miracle. I just wonder exactly how it’s working. I know we have an endocannabinoid system but how does that factor into brain function as well as the other bodily systems? I am loving this series as much as his Broken Brain 1.

Great to hear you’re loving this series as much as his Broken Brain 1 and that the CBD from hemp alleviates your chronic pain. Dr. Hyla Cass talks about CBD in episode 7 on Optimization and she does cover pain, explaining how the endocannabinoid system “is ubiquitous throughout the entire body. It’s a regulator, it’s a master modulator and connector. Whether it’s your hormones, your immune system, your mood; it’s all connected through the endocannabinoid system. And we can use CBD to enhance all of these functions; all the communication among and between all these systems.”
