{"id":992,"date":"2012-06-19T10:14:39","date_gmt":"2012-06-19T17:14:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/?p=992"},"modified":"2012-06-19T10:14:39","modified_gmt":"2012-06-19T17:14:39","slug":"exercise-and-nature-for-mood-social-anxiety-memory-and-hot-flashes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/exercise-and-nature-for-mood-social-anxiety-memory-and-hot-flashes\/","title":{"rendered":"Exercise and nature for mood, social anxiety, memory and hot flashes"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_1001\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1001\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1001\" title=\"sunset-after-windsurfing-lake-natoma\" src=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/sunset-after-windsurfing-lake-natoma.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1001\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Beautiful sunset at Lake Natoma, CA \u2013 after a fun time windsurfing<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>June is <strong>Celebrate the Great Outdoors <\/strong>month and June 15<sup>th<\/sup> was<strong> Nature Photography Day.<\/strong> These are just one of the many great reasons to get outside to exercise and enjoy nature.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve blogged a great deal about <strong>exercise and the outdoors<\/strong> a great deal \u2013 when I reported back about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/food-exercise-biofeedback-nutrients-for-anxiety-at-adaa\/\" target=\"_blank\">food-exercise-biofeedback from the ADAA conference<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/john-muir-calm-relaxed-get-outside\/\" target=\"_blank\">nature and calm in Yosemite<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here is some very recent research on some more great health benefits to motivate you!<\/p>\n<p><strong>(1)\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>Improved mood and better memory<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A recent paper and titled <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0165032712002005\" target=\"_blank\">Interacting with nature improves cognition and affect for individuals with depression<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and published in the <em>Journal of Affective Disorders<\/em> <strong>found that<\/strong> something as simple and easy as 50 minute walk in the park improved cognition and mood.<\/p>\n<p>(2)\u00a0 <strong>Improved sleep<\/strong> and <strong>reduction in hot flashes<\/strong> in menopausal women<\/p>\n<p>Another recent paper titled <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22673453\" target=\"_blank\">Sleep quality and aerobic training among menopausal women-A randomized controlled trial<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and published in the Finnish Journal <em>Maturitas<\/em> found that aerobic training for 6 months may improve sleep quality and reduce hot flushes among symptomatic menopausal women.<\/p>\n<p><strong>(3)\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>Less social anxiety and depression<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This recent paper titled <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22623316\" target=\"_blank\">A Randomized Trial of MBSR Versus Aerobic Exercise for Social Anxiety Disorder<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and published in the <em>Journal of Clinical Psychology<\/em><strong> <\/strong>found that both mindfulness-based stress reduction and aerobic exercise \u201cwere associated with reductions in social anxiety and depression and increases in subjective well-being\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Exercising has always been a big part of my life and I feel really flat when I don\u2019t exercise. I grew up in a tennis family and played tennis for years and then switched to squash (similar to the US racket ball) when I got to high-school. In my 20s and 30s I did a lot of 5K and 10K runs, trail running and a few half-marathons \u2013 all in the beautiful Colorado mountains. I actually met my wonderful husband rock-climbing and we spent many fun years rock-climbing, ice-climbing and mountaineering!<\/p>\n<p>These days we love to windsurf, hike and mountain bike in the summer. In the winter I telemark ski and Brad does snowboarding.<\/p>\n<p>So I encourage you to get outside to celebrate the great outdoors, have fun exercising and take some beautiful photos.<\/p>\n<p>At your next social event you\u2019ll be chatty, calm and happy, will remember everyone\u2019s name and you won\u2019t be having hot-flashes!
