{"id":96,"date":"2010-07-16T11:27:06","date_gmt":"2010-07-16T06:57:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/everywomanover29.wordpress.com\/?p=96"},"modified":"2015-08-12T15:09:53","modified_gmt":"2015-08-12T22:09:53","slug":"is-your-fear-of-eating-fat-making-you-fat-and-grumpy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/is-your-fear-of-eating-fat-making-you-fat-and-grumpy\/","title":{"rendered":"Is your fear of eating fat making you fat and grumpy?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/salmon-518032__180.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3772\" src=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/salmon-518032__180.jpg\" alt=\"salmon\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our fear of eating fat \u2013 all fat,     any fat &#8211; has resulted in the majority of us being <strong>deficient in essential fatty acids (EFAs)<\/strong>.\u00a0 These EFAs are <strong>very important for fat metabolism<\/strong>,   so not eating enough of them could be one of the reasons you may be struggling to lose weight.\u00a0 These \u201cgood\u201d fats are involved in regulating every body-function at the cellular level, so this is no surprise.\u00a0 One of the ways they help with weight-loss is <strong>slowing the absorption of carbohydrates so your blood sugar levels will be more balanced<\/strong>.\u00a0 They are also used to make <strong>serotonin which is important for controlling food cravings<\/strong>.\u00a0 And we all know that <strong>low serotonin can make you feel depressed and grumpy!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>These good fats are called essential because our bodies cannot make them \u2013 we have to get them from our diets.\u00a0 So what do we need to do to reverse this deficiency?\u00a0 One easy change we can make is to <strong>eat more cold-water fish such as salmon, sardines and mackerel <\/strong>&#8211; look for <strong>wild fish<\/strong> rather than farmed and try and eat at least 2 servings a week. Essential fats can also be found in <strong>walnuts, bean sprouts and leafy green vegetables<\/strong> such as spinach, kale and radish greens \u2013 so be sure to include these in your diet.\u00a0 <strong>Wild game<\/strong> or <strong>grass-fed beef<\/strong> have more of the good omegas than grain-fed meats.\u00a0 <strong>Flaxseeds are also an excellent source<\/strong> of EFAs and are especially <strong>good for your hormones and digestion<\/strong>. They can be ground up and added to oats or a smoothie for breakfast. Flax oil can also be mixed with olive oil, apple cider vinegar, lemon juice and spices to make a healthful salad dressing.<\/p>\n<p>It is really important to <strong>make sure you aren\u2019t negating the good effects<\/strong> of your EFA consumption.\u00a0 Eating a diet high in refined sugar with refined processed carbohydrates (such as white bread or donuts), and lots of hydrogenated oils (found in processed food and margarine) will prevent efficient absorption of these good fats. So, <strong>focus on eating a whole foods diet<\/strong> \u2013 home-made food using fresh vegetables and fruits, good quality proteins, whole grains and enough of those good fats.<\/p>\n<p>Well-known nutritionist Ann Louise Gittleman sums it up very nicely: \u201c<strong>With the right fats, you\u2019ll end fat cravings, feel full, have more energy and lose weight<\/strong>\u201d.
