I use the inflammation research to question if this may be applicable and helpful for you if you suffer from anxiety, extrapolating that it may well be given the added benefits of touch and an oxytocin boost.<\/p>\n<p>I received a number of great questions about how to apply this information and have decided to share a question from someone with both Sjogren\u2019s syndrome and anxiety, in order to illustrate how I\u2019d work with someone like this.<\/p>\n<p>Here is the question I received:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I would like to know how much of one\u2019s body needs to be moisturized, and if it is also necessary to be done twice per day? Such a simple but effective way to help with anxiety. Will be slathering a lot more in the future! I have Sjogren\u2019s so everything is dry &#8211; skin, mouth, eyes, hair. I have been trying to keep my face much \u201cmoister\u201d and I am sure my wrinkles have lessened. I find rice bran oil is also quite good.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I\u2019m going to address her moisturizing question below and share more about anxiety in Sjogren\u2019s syndrome and some nutritional solutions, but first let me explain what Sjogren\u2019s syndrome is.<\/p>\n<h2>An overview of Sjogren\u2019s syndrome<\/h2>\n<p>Let me explain what Sjogren\u2019s (SHOW-grins) is in case you\u2019re not familiar with this condition. It\u2019s an autoimmune condition and is described as follows on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/sjogrens-syndrome\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20353216\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the Mayo Clinic site<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>often accompanies other immune system disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. In Sjogren&#8217;s syndrome, the mucous membranes and moisture-secreting glands of your eyes and mouth are usually affected first \u2014 resulting in decreased tears and saliva.<\/p>\n<p>Although you can develop Sjogren&#8217;s syndrome at any age, most people are older than 40 at the time of diagnosis. The condition is much more common in women.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The site goes on to say that other than dry eyes and mouth, some people experience joint pain and stiffness, swollen salivary glands, skin rashes or dry skin, vaginal dryness, persistent dry cough and prolonged fatigue. It\u2019s worth <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/sjogrens-syndrome\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20353216\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a read<\/a>\u00a0to learn more about complications like more dental cavities, yeast infections, vision issues, problems in the lungs, kidneys or liver, the risk of lymphoma and peripheral neuropathy.<\/p>\n<h2>My feedback about moisturizing<\/h2>\n<p>In the study, moisturizing was done twice a day. I\u2019m not sure how much of the body needs to be moisturized but if everything is dry, I\u2019d want to moisturize as much as possible.<\/p>\n<p>Given that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27441838\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">chronic inflammation<\/a>\u00a0is a major factor in Sjogren\u2019s and other autoimmune conditions like systemic lupus erythematosus, it\u2019s feasible to expect similar benefits in terms of reduced inflammation. Hopefully we\u2019ll see research on autoimmune conditions in the future.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to anxiety, I do want to make it clear that I was and still am extrapolating from the research on inflammation and measuring reduced anxiety was not part of the study. Moisturizing may or may not help with anxiety and I certainly wouldn\u2019t only use this intervention.<\/p>\n<h2>Anxiety in Sjogren\u2019s \u2013 low serotonin and GABA?<\/h2>\n<p>You may not be aware that anxiety\/depression is very common in Sjogren\u2019s. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5956972\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">one study<\/a>\u00a0they<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>found 33.8% patients with anxiety, and 36.9% had depression, which were significantly higher than controls.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I use a comprehensive nutritional and lifestyle approach to help my clients ease their anxiety and as I mention above, I would not only rely on moisturizing.<\/p>\n<p>I would use the serotonin questionnaire\u00a0to determine if low serotonin is contributing to the anxiety (the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/tryptophan-worry-head-ruminating-type-anxiety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">worry-in-the head and rumination type of anxiety<\/a>) and do a trial of tryptophan or 5-HTP.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, a number of studies suggest the involvement of the serotonin system in the development of Sjogren\u2019s, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22819441\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">one study<\/a> reporting<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Significantly lower platelet levels of serotonin in Sjogren\u2019s patients as compared to healthy controls.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>They didn\u2019t find a correlation between the levels of serotonin and how severe the Sjogren\u2019s symptoms were, which falls in line with what we know about biochemical individuality and why doing a trial of tryptophan or 5-HTP (to find your ideal dose) is the best approach for serotonin support.<\/p>\n<p>I would use also the GABA questionnaire\u00a0to determine if low GABA (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/gaba-physical-tension-stiff-tense-muscles-type-anxiety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">physical tension type of anxiety<\/a>) is a factor, and do a trial of GABA.<\/p>\n<p>If you recall, in the Mayo Clinic description above, stiffness is a common symptom of Sjogren\u2019s and GABA eases stiffness.<\/p>\n<p>I haven\u2019t found any research on GABA in Sjogren\u2019s, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6123837\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">one case study<\/a>\u00a0reports that a patient experiencing athetoid movements (a movement dysfunction, characterized by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/athetosis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">involuntary writhing movements<\/a>), reported symptom improvement with hydroxychloroquine (which can have severe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/hydroxychloroquine-and-chloroquine-antimalarial-drugs-quinism-and-the-risk-of-sudden-and-lasting-neuropsychiatric-effects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">psychiatric effects in susceptible individuals<\/a>), pilocarpine, gabapentin, and clonazepam. The latter two medications work on the GABA system.<\/p>\n<p>You can find the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/amino-acids-pyroluria-supplements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tryptophan and GABA products I use with my clients here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Poor sociability in Sjogrens \u2013 could this be related to pyroluria?<\/h2>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6336324\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">study published earlier this year<\/a>\u00a0is reportedly the first study to conclude that patients with Sjogren\u2019s score \u201c<em>high on<\/em> <em>neuroticism and anxiety and low on sociability.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If social anxiety is a concern, I\u2019d have her do the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/pyroluria-questionnaire-from-the-antianxiety-food-solution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pyroluria questionnaire<\/a>\u00a0and address this if needed.<\/p>\n<p>If you recall, in the Mayo Clinic description above, joint pain and dental cavities are common symptoms. These are also very common with pyroluria, so using a nutritional approach helps ease the social anxiety, and improves joint issues and mouth health.<\/p>\n<p>The other factor that makes me suspect pyroluria may be common in Sjogren\u2019s is that it\u2019s considered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18984413\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a systemic connective tissue disorder<\/a>, together with systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis. You can read more about pyroluria and connective tissue disorders on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/pyroluria-prevalence-associated-conditions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the pyroluria prevalence blog<\/a>\u00a0and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/joint-hypermobility-ehlers-danlos-syndrome-pyroluria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ehlers Danlos\/joint hypermobility blog<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Poor mouth health is also common with histapenia\/low histamine so I\u2019d want to look into this too.<\/p>\n<p>You can find the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/amino-acids-pyroluria-supplements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pyroluria supplements I use with my clients here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Sjogren\u2019s and the Autoimmune-Paleo diet<\/h2>\n<p>Since Sjogren\u2019s is an autoimmune condition, following an Autoimmune-Paleo (AIP) diet is key too. Here are some books that are well-worth making part of your library, even though they are not specific to Sjogren&#8217;s syndrome they offer support for autoimmune conditions (and many individuals often have more than one autoimmune disease)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/hashimotos-protocol-izabella-wentz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hashimoto\u2019s Protocol by Dr. Izabella Wentz<\/a>\u00a0(Hashimoto\u2019s is an autoimmune thyroid condition)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/hashimotos-food-pharmacology-a-new-recipe-book-by-dr-izabella-wentz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hashimoto\u2019s Food Pharmacology, a recipe book by Dr. Izabella Wentz<\/a> (both on Hashimoto\u2019s but applicable to any autoimmune condition)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/cooking-for-hormone-balance-a-new-book-by-magdalena-wszelaki\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cooking for Hormone Balance: a recipe book by Magdalena Wszelaki<\/a> (she has AIP recipes)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/the-autoimmune-solution-cookbook-by-amy-myers-md\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Autoimmune Solution Cookbook by Amy Myers MD<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I haven\u2019t dived into the research on all the other autoimmune conditions and the above connections (low serotonin, low GABA and pyroluria) but it\u2019s highly likely similar connections exist.
