And so, one of the key things that being keto-adapted does\u2014not only does it downregulate inflammation in the brain, and we know that depression now is really neuroinflammation.<\/p>\n<p>So the other big thing is we\u2019ve got these neurotransmitters. One is glutamate;\u00a0the other is GABA. Glutamate is an excitatory neurotransmitter, meaning that\u00a0it helps us think sharply and quickly. What balances glutamate is this other neurotransmitter called GABA, gamma-aminobutyric acid. And it\u2019s inhibitory.\u00a0It helps balance us and calm us. What we find is that people with anxiety,\u00a0they have high glutamate, low GABA. They don\u2019t have a good ratio. Same thing\u00a0with depression.<\/p>\n<p>So what a ketogenic diet does, when we\u2019re keto-adapted, it helps balance out\u00a0the glutamate to GABA ratio and creates stability there. What does that mean\u00a0to you? That means you\u2019re going to be able to think sharply and quickly but\u00a0you\u2019re not going to get out of control. Your brain\u2019s not going to be going too\u00a0fast. You\u2019re not going to be at risk for anxiety, for depression in the same way.\u00a0You\u2019re going to notice just an improved mood, more emotional balance.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Dr. David Perlmutter shares the importance of blood sugar regulation in his interview &#8216;Keto for Brain Health&#8217;:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Blood sugar regulation is pivotal as it relates to the destiny of your brain. And so what you see is a high 8-OHdG &#8211;\u00a0you see that high in conditions like Alzheimer\u2019s or Parkinson\u2019s but you even see it\u00a0high in depression or bipolar or anxiety. What you also see is a ketogenic diet,\u00a0helps to lower that. What you also see is adding more antioxidants, helps to\u00a0lower that.
