If yes, then read on.<\/p>\n<p>On January 10<sup>th<\/sup> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.holisticmoms.org\/aboutus\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Holistic Moms Network<\/a> invited me to answer questions at their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/food-and-mood-holistic-moms-network-twitter-party\/\" target=\"_blank\">January 10<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0Twitter party on Food and Mood<\/a>. It was a great virtual \u201cevent\u201d with really great questions.<\/p>\n<p>A colleague, Mira Dessy, Certified Nutrition Educator and holistic health columnist, provided a <a href=\"http:\/\/grainsandmore.blogspot.com\/2012\/01\/twitter-party-holisticmoms.html\" target=\"_blank\">great summary<\/a> of much of the discussion. I\u2019m doing this post to add to it and to clarify a few things\u2026<\/p>\n<p>I think this is a great statement Mira made: \u201c<em>The chat started with a discussion of whether or not folks noticed if there were certain foods that made them anxious or affected their mood. Answers were fairly consistent across the board with responses including sugar, caffeine, gluten, McDonalds, and processed food<\/em>.\u201d I love that gluten was a hot topic and want to add the possible issue with GMO grains.<\/p>\n<p>But what I\u2019d really like to address the whole <strong>sugar discussion<\/strong>. With regards to this statement on Mira\u2019s blog: \u201c<em>Sugar was by far the biggest offender with many participants discussing how difficult it can be to break the sugar habit<\/em>\u201d and this recommendation which didn\u2019t actually come from me \ud83d\ude42 \u201c<em>choose lower process sweeteners such as sucanat, evaporated cane juice crystals, honey, molasses, maple syrup<\/em>\u201d. I believe that if you replace white sugar with equal amounts of any of the above then it\u2019s an issue. Ideally, <strong>a moderate amount of fresh fruit should satisfy your desire for something sweet<\/strong> and <strong>you shouldn\u2019t have a sweet tooth<\/strong>. And you should not be seeking out the next \u201chealthy\u201d sweetener that comes on the market! If you do, it\u2019s a message that you need to <strong>address your diet, nutrient deficiencies, imbalanced brain chemistry or even an addiction, or candida<\/strong>. This may apply whether you\u2019re craving \u201chealthy\u201d sweeteners, stevia or xylitol sugar, or foods with artificial sweeteners. I asked this question \u201c<strong>why do u eat sugar &#8211; comfort, calming, energy<\/strong>?\u201d and these were some of the responses: \u201call of the above\u201d and \u201cI\u2019d need to lose both arms to stop myself from eating sugar\u201d. It really doesn\u2019t have to be this way! You <strong>can quit<\/strong> and <strong>not have to use willpower and not feel deprived<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p>We didn\u2019t have time to get completely into the <strong>individual amino acids<\/strong> (a future Twitter party ??) but they are incredible for <strong>stopping cravings in their tracks<\/strong> and <strong>improving mood<\/strong>. For example <strong>if you eat sugary food to calm down perhaps its low GABA<\/strong> and you may benefit from GABA supplements. Here is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/low-gaba-questionnaire-anxiety\/\" target=\"_blank\">Low GABA questionnaire<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Again, <strong>thanks to Mira<\/strong> and <a href=\"http:\/\/grainsandmore.blogspot.com\/2012\/01\/twitter-party-holisticmoms.html\" target=\"_blank\">read her blog<\/a>\u00a0to get the rest of the discussion.
