It is very common and may be associated with <strong>low serotonin levels<\/strong>. We often associate low serotonin with depression, however low serotonin can also be associated with: <strong>anxiety, excessive worry and feeling overly stressed<\/strong>. There\u2019s <strong>evidence of seasonality in anxiety and panic attacks<\/strong>, just as there is with seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Another common sign of low serotonin is <strong>increased carbohydrate cravings<\/strong>, especially during the afternoon or evening.<\/p>\n<p>Does this sound like you during the December holidays: <strong>Blah<\/strong>? <strong>Depressed <\/strong>for no reason? <strong>Stressed<\/strong>? <strong>Overwhelmed<\/strong>? <strong>Anxious<\/strong>? <strong>Eating tons of carbs and sugary foods<\/strong>? Perhaps it\u2019s not only the stress of the holidays but is made worse by low serotonin?!<\/p>\n<p>For many of my clients who are prone to having their serotonin levels decline in the winter months, if they don\u2019t the following <strong>approaches to raise serotonin<\/strong> they end up with worsening depression and anxiety, and increased afternoon and evening sugar cravings.<\/p>\n<p>So here are some tips to feel great during the holidays:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>use <strong>light therapy<\/strong>, using a full-spectrum lamp<\/li>\n<li>address any <a title=\"l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/vitamin-d\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>deficiency of vitamin D<\/strong><\/a> as there is evidence that it may improve seasonal anxiety and depression<\/li>\n<li><strong><a title=\"l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/exercise-and-nature-for-mood-social-anxiety-memory-and-hot-flashes\/\" target=\"_blank\">moderate exercise raises serotonin levels<\/a> and relieves anxiety and depression<\/strong>, so it\u2019s important to get some exercise during the winter months \u2013 join the gym or ideally do something outdoors like skiing.<\/li>\n<li>the <a title=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/anxiety-summit-targeted-individual-amino-acids-eliminating-anxiety-practical-applications\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>amino acids tryptophan and 5-HTP<\/strong><\/a>, taken in supplement form are tremendously powerful for raising serotonin levels \u2013 dramatically improving depression and anxiety, and stopping those afternoon and evening cravings. If you are taking a SSRI, it\u2019s important to work with your doctor before taking tryptophan and 5-HTP<\/li>\n<li>eat <strong>real whole foods<\/strong> with good quality protein<\/li>\n<li>eat to <a title=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/low-blood-sugar-can-result-in-anxiety\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>avoid blood sugar swings<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>avoid junk foods and sugar <\/strong>(made easier by doing all of the above!)<\/li>\n<li>stay <a title=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/minimize-holiday-weight-gain\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>hydrated and drink enough water<\/strong><\/a> even if it is cold &#8211; research shows its helps to boost neurotransmitters levels<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/holiday-gifts-antianxiety-food-solution-spingym-food\" target=\"_blank\">Check out some great holiday gift ideas to help with all of the above<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I live in the Sacramento area and from November onwards it\u2019s pretty gloomy and grey.
