{"id":469,"date":"2011-07-29T14:50:47","date_gmt":"2011-07-29T21:50:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/?p=469"},"modified":"2011-07-29T08:59:09","modified_gmt":"2011-07-29T15:59:09","slug":"arthritis-a-natural-approach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/arthritis-a-natural-approach\/","title":{"rendered":"Arthritis: a natural approach"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/oliveoil.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-471\" title=\"olive oil\" src=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/oliveoil.jpg\" alt=\"olive oil for rheumatoid arthritis\" width=\"132\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>Diet has been strongly implicated in rheumatoid arthritis<\/strong> for many years, in terms of both cause and cure\u201d writes Dr Michael Murray, naturopathic doctor.\u00a0 He goes on to state that many studies have shown that \u201crheumatoid arthritis is <strong>not found in societies that eat a more primitive diet<\/strong> and is found at a <strong>relatively high rates<\/strong> in societies consuming the <strong>so-called Western diet<\/strong>\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0 Eating a healthy diet appears to offer some protection against developing rheumatoid arthritis and diet therapy shows tremendous promise in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.<\/p>\n<p>At one of my recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/antianxiety-food-solution-great-questions-avid-reader\/\" target=\"_blank\">local book signings for <em>The Antianxiety Food Solution<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0a gentleman in the audience asked me about arthritis and I promised him I\u2019d share an article about it. I actually spent year in South Africa working with many folks with rheumatoid arthritis and they found <strong>some amazing benefits <\/strong>with some of what follows in this <strong>natural approach to arthritis<\/strong>. There are also a surprising number of studies on food\/nutrients and RA. It\u2019s also much <strong>more common in women<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p>So, continuing with the article\u2026There is evidence that rheumatoid arthritis is less severe in the southern Mediterranean countries, such as Italy and Greece, where <strong>oil-rich fish, fruit, vegetables and olive oil<\/strong> are consumed in greater amounts than in many other countries.\u00a0 The <strong>Mediterranean-type diet<\/strong> can be considered a primitive diet since it is <strong>rich in<\/strong> <strong>whole foods<\/strong> and also <strong>low in sugar, refined carbohydrates and other processed Western-type foods<\/strong>.\u00a0 A number of studies have shown that people with rheumatoid arthritis, who changed to a Mediterranean-type diet, experienced <strong>reduced inflammation, increased physical function<\/strong> and <strong>improved vitality. <\/strong>And a better mood!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Two important components<\/strong> of the Mediterranean way of eating seem to be very helpful for reducing the inflammation associated with rheumatoid arthritis:\u00a0 <strong>olive oil and oily fish.<\/strong> An additional bonus of consuming <strong>olive oil<\/strong> is that it <strong>promotes the healing of the digestive system. <\/strong>There is<strong> often damage <\/strong>as a result of taking <strong>anti-inflammatory drugs<\/strong> for long periods.\u00a0 And fish oil has been shown to <strong>reduce the risk of heart disease<\/strong>, which is <strong>common with <\/strong><strong>rheumatoid arthritis. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Another dietary consideration is addressing <strong>food intolerances<\/strong> \u2013 there are a number of foods that can be considered triggers of symptoms and one of these is <strong>gluten<\/strong>.\u00a0 So, some people with rheumatoid arthritis may also benefit from excluding <strong>wheat, oats, rye and barley<\/strong> from their diets.
