Anxiety and digestion: the microbiome, stomach acid, bile and the vagus nerve"},"content":{"rendered":"<div align=\"center\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4650\" src=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Liz-Lipski_Anxiety4.png\" alt=\"Liz Lipski_Anxiety4\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Liz-Lipski_Anxiety4.png 300w, https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Liz-Lipski_Anxiety4-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/div>\n<p>Prof. Liz Lipski,   PhD, CCN, CNS,\u00a0was interviewed on the Anxiety Summit by host of <a title=\"as\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theAnxietySummit.com\" target=\"_blank\">the Anxiety Summit<\/a>, Trudy Scott, Food Mood Expert and Nutritionist, author of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1572249250\/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=wwwantianxiet-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=217145&amp;creative=399349&amp;creativeASIN=1572249250%20\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Antianxiety Food Solution.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Anxiety and digestion: the microbiome, stomach acid, bile and the vagus nerve<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The microbiome \u2013 how these microbes are \u201cus\u201d and not different from us<\/li>\n<li>Low stomach acid and the effects on protein\/zinc\/iron absorption, and candida<\/li>\n<li>Low bile production and fat absorption issues<\/li>\n<li>The vagus nerve, enteric nervous system and neurotransmitter production<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here are some gems from our interview:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>So just to start the microbiome itself is not something separate from us but it\u2019s the most newly recognized organ that we have in the human body.\u00a0 And it\u2019s comprised of viruses, bacteria and fungi.\u00a0 And they\u2019re like our rainforest and they live in every epithelial cell surface of our body so they\u2019re on our skin, they\u2019re in your lungs, in your hair, in your nailbeds.\u00a0 They\u2019re in your genitourinary system, in your digestive system, in your nose.\u00a0 They\u2019re really everywhere and I think that we\u2019re also going to find that we have these microbes inside of our brain and inside of our liver and I think the more we learn we\u2019re going to find that they\u2019re really everywhere.<\/p>\n<p>The thing that excites me about them is that they really help run our metabolism, help determine whether we\u2019re fat or thin, help determine what our moods are like and how we feel.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I just love this comment about the microbiome:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>And honestly I never know are we just a big bag for carrying around these microbes and they\u2019re really the intelligence in our body or what?\u00a0 Because they\u2019re kind of like the superstars and we\u2019re really a super organism.\u00a0 And without them we don\u2019t function at all.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Here is some of what covered in the gut brain connection section:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>We make a lot of neurotransmitters in our gut.\u00a0 In fact we make about 80 to 90 percent of our neurotransmitters like serotonin.\u00a0 We make most of it in our digestive system and not in our brain at all.\u00a0 And when you start looking at it, it\u2019s like wow, you look at dopamine and epinephrine and norepinephrine and all of these are made in great abundance in the digestive system itself and again they help modulate again the microbiome.\u00a0 They help modulate gut motility, so how fast or how slow the food moves through our digestive system.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Here is a fascinating article that covers much of the new research. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/news\/the-tantalizing-links-between-gut-microbes-and-the-brain-1.18557\" target=\"_blank\">The tantalizing links between gut microbes and the brain<\/a> : Neuroscientists are probing the idea that intestinal microbiota might influence brain development and behaviour.<\/p>\n<p>We cover hydrochloric acid and minerals:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>So hydrochloric acid is really important for that.\u00a0 It also helps us just break down proteins so that our digestive enzymes don\u2019t have to work so hard.\u00a0 And then it also in the beginning of the small intestine which is called the duodenum -it\u2019s the first 12 to 18 inches &#8211; what happens is that the acid is still there before it get neutralized by the pancreas which secretes basically baking soda and neutralizes it because it\u2019s done its job.\u00a0 But in that first big part of the small intestine, the duodenum, is where we absorb iron and calcium and zinc and to a lesser extent magnesium and copper.\u00a0 And so when we don\u2019t have enough acid we\u2019re more likely to get mineral insufficient.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This is the book she mentions in the interview &#8211;
