Serotonin and anxiety: tryptophan, 5-HTP, serotonin syndrome and medication tapers"},"content":{"rendered":"<div align=\"center\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4653\" src=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Peter-Bongiorno_Anxiety4.png\" alt=\"Peter Bongiorno_Anxiety4\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Peter-Bongiorno_Anxiety4.png 300w, https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Peter-Bongiorno_Anxiety4-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/div>\n<p>Dr. Peter Bongiorno, ND, author of <em>Holistic Therapies for Anxiety and Depression<\/em>, is interviewed on the Anxiety Summit by host of <a title=\"as\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theAnxietySummit.com\" target=\"_blank\">the Anxiety Summit<\/a>, Trudy Scott, Food Mood Expert and Nutritionist, author of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1572249250\/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=wwwantianxiet-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=217145&amp;creative=399349&amp;creativeASIN=1572249250%20\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Antianxiety Food Solution.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Serotonin and anxiety: tryptophan, 5-HTP, serotonin syndrome and medication tapers<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What is the serotonin hypothesis and serotonin syndrome<\/li>\n<li>Concerns about tryptophan and kynurenine and neurotoxic quinolinic acid<\/li>\n<li>When to use tryptophan and when to use 5-HTP<\/li>\n<li>Working with a prescribing doctor to do a SSRI (and benzo) taper<\/li>\n<li>John\u2019s Wort, saffron and venetron for anxiety and depression<\/li>\n<li>Hydrotherapy and hugs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here are some snippets from our interview:<\/p>\n<p>Here are some gems from our interview:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>As far as St. John\u2019s Wort I would honestly put that in a different category because St. John\u2019s Wort is not just another type of serotonin enhancer or SSRI.\u00a0 It has many, many other activities.\u00a0 It supports the thyroid.\u00a0 It really helps digestion.\u00a0 It\u2019s a good anti-inflammatory.\u00a0 It calms the nervous system.\u00a0 And it also supports other neurotransmitters too.\u00a0 So to me St. John\u2019s Wort is more like a beautiful food that has these very pleiotropic effects and really helps the whole body kind of cope and gain resilience.\u00a0 Years ago St. John\u2019s Wort was originally used to ward off evil spirits in olden times.\u00a0 And so it has a tremendous history of supporting people with mood and especially people who are very fatigued in the process and they can\u2019t cope and they have no resilience.\u00a0 So I think St. John\u2019s Wort is definitely more than just a serotonin enhancer.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>We also cover carnitine:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>One of the things I like to check is something called carnitine which is an amino acid which plays a role in how energy is carried in the body.\u00a0 And many women get much depleted in carnitine as they move through pregnancy through the trimesters.\u00a0 And that\u2019s actually quite safe to take during pregnancy and I\u2019ve seen that be very, very helpful in women with mood issues either during pregnancy or postpartum.\u00a0 And there are plenty of studies that show the safety of carnitine.\u00a0 So that\u2019s one of the things I definitely like to look at along with taking some magnesium which is also safe during pregnancy.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>We discuss medication tapers of SSRIs:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>And the weaning process would have to be different for everyone.\u00a0 Some patients who have been on some of these mood altering medications for many years you can\u2019t just wean off quickly.\u00a0 You have to go exceedingly slow.\u00a0 And depending on how they do then we can support their brain and their body with more nutrients to help that process go as easily as possible and minimize any kind of withdrawal effect.\u00a0 The body will tell us what to do as we go along.\u00a0 But again the most important thing is that we really establish all the basics and that they\u2019re in the healthiest place possible.\u00a0 Because if those aren\u2019t there, if a patient just gets off the medication and we haven\u2019t really done anything to change the underlying reasons why they got to the place where they had the mood issue.\u00a0 In most cases they\u2019re going to go back there again.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Here are two of Dr. Bongiorno\u2019s books:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1573245801\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1573245801&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=wwwantianxiet-20&amp;linkId=QL7GF3ELD3ZEJ2DU\" target=\"_blank\">How Come They\u2019re Happy and I\u2019m Not &#8211;
