{"id":4518,"date":"2016-06-10T01:10:28","date_gmt":"2016-06-10T08:10:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/?p=4518"},"modified":"2016-06-10T01:32:03","modified_gmt":"2016-06-10T08:32:03","slug":"leptin-obesity-anxiety-connection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/leptin-obesity-anxiety-connection\/","title":{"rendered":"The Anxiety Summit &#8211; The leptin obesity anxiety connection"},"content":{"rendered":"<div align=\"center\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4652\" src=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Mike-Mutzel_Anxiety4.png\" alt=\"Mike Mutzel_Anxiety4\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Mike-Mutzel_Anxiety4.png 300w, https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Mike-Mutzel_Anxiety4-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/div>\n<p>Mike Mutzel,   MS,   author of <em>Belly Fat Effect<\/em>,  \u00a0was interviewed on the Anxiety Summit by host of <a title=\"as\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theAnxietySummit.com\" target=\"_blank\">the Anxiety Summit<\/a>, Trudy Scott, Food Mood Expert and Nutritionist, author of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1572249250\/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=wwwantianxiet-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=217145&amp;creative=399349&amp;creativeASIN=1572249250%20\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Antianxiety Food Solution.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The leptin obesity anxiety connection<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Leptin as an appetite-regulation hormone<\/li>\n<li>How leptin effects on immunity, inflammation and cortisol<\/li>\n<li>Leptin and the microbiome, LPS and leaky gut<\/li>\n<li>How leptin plays a role in anxiety, stress, PTSD and depression<\/li>\n<li>How to exercise, meditate and do yoga to decrease leptin levels<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here are some snippets from our interview:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>So low leptin levels trigger the hypothalamus in the brain to signal the rest of the body to initiate hunger and to cause people to eat and so forth.\u00a0 And then as we eat calories throughout the day our leptin levels progressively rise.\u00a0 And once they\u2019re rising, they peak around midnight or two in the morning, it just depends on someone\u2019s biological rhythms.\u00a0 Everyone is different.<\/p>\n<p>And so when they peak that signals to the rest of the body that there\u2019s enough fuel on board and we can start burning fuel.\u00a0 So it\u2019s actually a good process, right, because it\u2019s going to stimulate all these mitochondrial pathways to be turning on basically cellular breakdown of the nutrients that we\u2019ve ingested throughout the day and then the cycle repeats.<\/p>\n<p>The problem though is that people get leptin resistant and this really actually refers to the hypothalamus.\u00a0 So that\u2019s really the main region of the body where the receptors become resistant.\u00a0 And so the problem then because people \u2013 and let me just pause and share with you kind of how people get leptin resistant.\u00a0 It\u2019s just leptin is released primarily from adipocytes, from fat tissue, okay.\u00a0 And so the more fat you have, the more body fat you have whether you\u2019re a man or a woman, young or old, the more leptin you\u2019re going to be releasing.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>And then we cover leptin 2.0 and the stress, anxiety, PTSD connection:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Now let\u2019s take a deep dive into what I like to call leptin 2.0.\u00a0 The cool part about leptin that not many people understand is that leptin affects the immune system.\u00a0 It also affects the HPA axis and the hormonal system, cortisol and even sex hormones like testosterone and estrogen in a really profound way.<\/p>\n<p>When you become more overweight, more sedentary, you eat outside of your circadian rhythm, leptin levels get imbalanced and you become leptin resistant. Leptin doesn\u2019t have that brake mechanism to suppress cortisol release.\u00a0 That\u2019s why we see elevated levels of leptin in PTSD, in stress responses, in overweight people and so forth.\u00a0 And so it affects our body\u2019s ability to adjust to our environment which is really what we\u2019re trying to do.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We all have stress.\u00a0 We\u2019re just trying to balance that better. The problem though is leptin, if we have excess levels of leptin that\u2019s going to affect our body\u2019s ability to cope with stressors and make life seem more challenging than it needs to be.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Here is the 2015 study I mentioned: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26150767\" target=\"_blank\"><u>The role of maternal obesity in the risk of neuropsychiatric disorders<\/u>\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>Animals exposed to maternal obesity and a high fat diet consumption display hyperactivity, impairments in social behavior, increased anxiety-like and depressive-like behaviors, substance addiction, food addiction, and diminished cognition. During development, these offspring are exposed to elevated levels of nutrients (fatty acids, glucose), hormones (leptin, insulin), and inflammatory factors (C-reactive protein, interleukin, and tumor necrosis factor). Such factors appear to permanently change neuroendocrine regulation and brain development in offspring.
