{"id":4508,"date":"2016-06-07T09:55:29","date_gmt":"2016-06-07T16:55:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/?p=4508"},"modified":"2016-06-09T12:38:48","modified_gmt":"2016-06-09T19:38:48","slug":"anxiety-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/anxiety-community\/","title":{"rendered":"The Anxiety Summit &#8211; Anxiety and the Importance of Community"},"content":{"rendered":"<div align=\"center\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4643\" src=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/James-Maskell_Anxiety4.png\" alt=\"James Maskell_Anxiety4\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/James-Maskell_Anxiety4.png 300w, https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/James-Maskell_Anxiety4-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/div>\n<p>James Maskell,   creator of Functional Forum,  \u00a0was interviewed on the Anxiety Summit by host of <a title=\"as\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theAnxietySummit.com\" target=\"_blank\">the Anxiety Summit<\/a>,   Trudy Scott, Food Mood Expert and Nutritionist, author of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1572249250\/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=wwwantianxiet-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=217145&amp;creative=399349&amp;creativeASIN=1572249250%20\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Antianxiety Food Solution.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Anxiety and the Importance of Community<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The definition of community and examples<\/li>\n<li>The Functional Forum and a medication talk by Dr. Hyla Cass<\/li>\n<li>The effect of social support on HPA axis function during pregnancy.<\/li>\n<li>Social support for parents of autistic children<\/li>\n<li>An interview with Kelly Brogan: the role of community in mental health<\/li>\n<li>Community and social anxiety\/introversion<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here are some gems from our interview:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u2026the solution to chronic disease is integrative or functional medicine because it\u2019s preventive, it\u2019s proactive, it\u2019s participatory on behalf of the patient.\u00a0 And so our goal and our vision is big Trudy.\u00a0 The first thing has been to increase the supply of these functional medicine doctors because you need them and they can\u2019t be replaced by technology.\u00a0 The human element is a really big part.\u00a0 But the first step is to get enough of those doctors and then the next step is to galvanize those practitioners into a really efficient system that takes the best use of technology.\u00a0 It takes the best use of human interaction and uses practitioners in the most efficient way to be able to keep and get people well as effectively as possible.<\/p>\n<p>What we need is people to work together.\u00a0 We need collaboration, not competition.\u00a0 We need people to really see the gifts of everyone.\u00a0 And really we need it to be a meritocracy [definition: a social system in which people\u2019s success in life depends primarily on their talents, abilities, and effort].\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Here is the big take-away from James \u2013 when it comes to community:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u2026the real results that we see that are most powerful Trudy is where people have been able to pair getting together into a community with other healthy behaviors.\u00a0 So getting a group of people together to go on a run or to go on a walk together.\u00a0 You get the power of the community plus you get the power of everyone getting the exercise together<\/p>\n<p>Just going back to your idea of supporting each other, doing something together with a common goal.\u00a0 Going back to the Benzo Buddies story.\u00a0 Imagine if that group had local groups getting together.\u00a0 So they\u2019ve got this online forum supporting each other but if they got together and cooked a meal together and also meditated together and then supported each other getting off the benzodiazepine.\u00a0 So that would be what you\u2019re talking about the getting together and also supporting each other online.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Here are some of the studies we discussed in the interview:<\/p>\n<p>The aim of this study, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24163383\" target=\"_blank\">Effect of social support on HPA axis function during pregnancy<\/a>,\u00a0 was to assess whether individual differences in social support alter psychological distress and cortisol during pregnancy. There were 82 pregnant women in the study. Psychological distress and cortisol were assessed in all three trimesters. It was found that:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>Pregnant women receiving inadequate social support secrete higher levels of cortisol in response to psychological distress as compared with women receiving effective social support. Social support during pregnancy may be beneficial because it decreases biological sensitivity to psychological distress, potentially shielding the fetus from the harmful effects of stress-related increases in cortisol.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>New research also shows that for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2016\/04\/160406124631.htm\" target=\"_blank\">parents of autistic children, more social support<\/a> means better health, protection against stress-induced immune problems and reduced inflammation<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Hyla Cass, MD, integrative psychiatrist shares how to safely get of SSRIs and antianxiety medications and how to maintain good mental health once you are off them.
