{"id":4504,"date":"2016-06-08T00:37:25","date_gmt":"2016-06-08T07:37:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/?p=4504"},"modified":"2016-06-08T20:33:58","modified_gmt":"2016-06-09T03:33:58","slug":"nutrients-fuel-brain-power-reduce-anxiety","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/nutrients-fuel-brain-power-reduce-anxiety\/","title":{"rendered":"The Anxiety Summit &#8211; Nutrients that Fuel Brain Power and Reduce Anxiety"},"content":{"rendered":"<div align=\"center\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4641\" src=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Drew-Ramsey_Anxiety4.png\" alt=\"Drew Ramsey_Anxiety4\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Drew-Ramsey_Anxiety4.png 300w, https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Drew-Ramsey_Anxiety4-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/div>\n<p>Dr. Drew Ramsey,   M.D., psychiatrist, farmer, author of <em>Eat Complete<\/em>,\u00a0was interviewed on the Anxiety Summit by host of <a title=\"as\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theAnxietySummit.com\" target=\"_blank\">the Anxiety Summit<\/a>, Trudy Scott, Food Mood Expert and Nutritionist, author of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1572249250\/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=wwwantianxiet-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=217145&amp;creative=399349&amp;creativeASIN=1572249250%20\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Antianxiety Food Solution.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Nutrients that Fuel Brain Power and Reduce Anxiety<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The nutritional psychiatry movement and food as medicine<\/li>\n<li>The impact of food on brain health, neurogenesis and BDNF<\/li>\n<li>The hippocampus and your diet<\/li>\n<li>The 21 nutrients that are key for brain health<\/li>\n<li>The impacts of low zinc, low B12 and low choline diets<\/li>\n<li>How to get these nutrients in your diet<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here are some gems from our interview:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>One, oftentimes mental health symptoms stem from dietary insufficiencies.\u00a0 So people can feel more down, more anxious, more cloudy in their thinking based on the types of food that they\u2019re eating.\u00a0 And then secondly the strongest data is in terms of prevention.\u00a0 So if you do have a disorder \u2013 if you have an anxiety disorder or you do really struggle in a way with your mood there\u2019s some data that both the development of depression and the recurrence of depression &#8211; it\u2019s very highly correlated with your dietary pattern.\u00a0 And so nutritional psychiatry in summary is looking at mental health through the lens of food and then adding nutrition as a tool to our toolbox as clinicians.\u00a0 I suspect most folks who are listening, maybe you\u2019ve seen a mental health clinician.\u00a0 If you think back to that initial intake was there really detailed dietary history that understood you as an eater?\u00a0 And usually the answer is no.\u00a0 And even in my own practice until a number of years ago that was no.\u00a0 And I\u2019ve trained at some of the best places when it comes to mental health.<\/p>\n<p>No fault of those organizations but it feels to me that this has been a tremendous blind spot for us both in medicine and in mental health.\u00a0 So I\u2019m very excited to see this growing movement.\u00a0 We have the new International Society of Nutrition and Psychiatry Research. There\u2019s been tremendous interest from the American Psychiatry Association in terms of how do we get this into our treatment standards.\u00a0 So it\u2019s a very exciting moment I think in mental health.\u00a0 And I also personally like it because it allows me to talk about some other subjects besides psychotherapy or medications with my patients.\u00a0 And so it\u2019s a lot of fun to be talking about kale salads and do you know how to make ceviche and have you ever made mussels at home.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I love that Dr. Ramsey says: \u201cI eat for a bigger hippocampus.\u201d The hippocampus is an area of your brain involved in emotional regulation and learning.
