Our topic: \u201cWhat you need to know about seafood\u2014the ultimate brain and mood food\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Purity and contaminants such as mercury and radiation (Fukushima)<\/li>\n<li>Research showing the health benefits: anxiety, depression<\/li>\n<li>What if you are mercury-toxic and sensitive<\/li>\n<li>Farmed vs wild salmon (and other species)<\/li>\n<li>What about that fish-y smell<\/li>\n<li>The health benefits of fish roe<\/li>\n<li>Omega-3s and fish as \u2018Brain Food\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Omega3-6 balance and testing fatty acid levels<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div align=\"center\"><iframe src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/INHcsLXYZ4w?rel=0\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Here you have Randy talking about why fish is the ultimate brain and mood food<\/p>\n<p>Here is one of the Ralston selenium studies: Dietary selenium&#8217;s protective effects against methylmercury toxicity.<\/p>\n<p>This is the 2013 PLoS One study we discussed: <a title=\"paper\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23874437\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dietary patterns, n-3 fatty acids intake from seafood and high levels of anxiety symptoms during pregnancy: findings from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children <\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>The present study provides evidence of a relationship between dietary patterns, <\/em><em>fish<\/em><em> intake or n-3 PUFA intake from seafood and symptoms of <\/em><em>anxiety<\/em><em> in pregnancy, and suggests that dietary interventions could be used to reduce high <\/em><em>anxiety<\/em><em> symptoms during pregnancy.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This 2013 paper in the British Journal of Nutrition called <a title=\"paper\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23051591\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dietary intake of fish and PUFA, and clinical depressive and anxiety disorders in women <\/a>states<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>These are the first observational data to indicate a role for DHA in <\/em><em>anxiety<\/em><em> disorders<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In this 2014 animal study, <a title=\"study\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24191918\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fish oil improves anxiety-like, depressive-like and cognitive behaviors in olfactory bulbectomised rats study<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>fish oil supplementation during critical periods of brain development attenuated <\/em><em>anxiety<\/em><em>-like and depressive-like behaviors and cognitive dysfunction\u201d <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Here is some of our discussion on weighing the concerns of mercury toxicity versus the health benefits (since it\u2019s a topic that comes up a lot).\u00a0 This is what Randy shared:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Fish has a whole sort of micronutrient spectrum. They\u2019re swimming around out in this rich soup of minerals \u2013 vitamins, minerals, micronutrients \u2013 and you know, life evolved in the sea. And life has evolved amid background mercury levels forever, right? Because as much as half of it, if not more, comes from underwater volcanic activity and erosion of the land into the ocean. And mercury\u2019s a naturally occurring element. Of course, the problem with a lot of it now is that it comes from fossil fuel burning.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>But it\u2019s always been there, and so life has evolved a capacity to deal with a certain amount of it. And you know, I always acknowledge that people are different, and some people process things differently than other people. But really, when you think about it, common sense tells you that life evolved in the sea. Mercury\u2019s always been there, and I know there are studies of Alaskan natives from thousands of years ago, that they\u2019ve recovered hair samples from these Alaskan natives, and there\u2019s mercury in their hair. So it\u2019s not like it\u2019s something new that people are dealing with.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The message I hope people will take away is you\u2019ve got to assess the risk versus the benefit.
