{"id":1730,"date":"2014-04-11T14:00:02","date_gmt":"2014-04-11T21:00:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/?p=1730"},"modified":"2017-12-19T19:16:12","modified_gmt":"2017-12-20T03:16:12","slug":"neurotransmitters-food-addiction-dopamine-endorphins-gaba-serotonin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/neurotransmitters-food-addiction-dopamine-endorphins-gaba-serotonin\/","title":{"rendered":"Neurotransmitters in food addiction: dopamine, endorphins, GABA and serotonin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5097\" src=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/chocolate-cake-icecream.jpg\" alt=\"chocolate-cake-icecream\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/chocolate-cake-icecream.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/chocolate-cake-icecream-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Food can be as addicting as drugs<\/b> and we often see <b>mood changes<\/b> when someone has addictions or out of control cravings.<\/p>\n<p>In this blog post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/why-do-you-crave-how-self-medicate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Why do you crave and how do you self-medicate?<\/a> I covered a simple way for you to figure out <b>why you crave something<\/b> or why you\u2019re drawn to a particular food, substance, or behavior. I also said that it can be challenging to determine <b>which part of your brain chemistry it\u2019s affecting<\/b>, and you may not associate cravings with mood issues.<\/p>\n<p>In a series of connected articles I\u2019m going to share some of <b>the research supporting this<\/b>. If you\u2019ve read my book, <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2kptFWm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Antianxiety Food Solution<\/a>, or have been reading my blog posts, you know I like to share research-based evidence. Unfortunately there are not many double blind studies on intervention and symptom management when it comes to amino acids, but I\u2019ll be sharing the research that has been done \u2013 focusing on each neurotransmitter and amino acid individually.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s start with this 2013 review titled <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23826512\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pharmacotherapies for Overeating and Obesity<\/a>. Although the focus of the review is drug-based interventions for finding solutions to food addictions, <b>the mechanisms of food addiction is nicely spelled out<\/b>: <b>neurotransmitter or brain chemical imbalances<\/b>. I\u2019d like to add that all of this can be in play even if you are not obese \u2013 you just have to love sugar\/carbs, wine, coffee etc and eat or drink them to self-medicate.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i>\u201cResearch has shown that <b>obesity can and does cause changes in behavior<\/b> and in the brain itself that are <b>very similar to changes caused by drugs<\/b> of abuse\u201d<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><i>\u201cWhile <b>food addiction is not the causal agent of all obesity<\/b>, it is clear that <b>many people no longer eat to survive<\/b>, but instead <b>survive to eat<\/b>.\u201d<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><i>\u201cThis review considers the importance of <b>the brain&#8217;s reward system<\/b> in food intake.\u201d<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><i>\u201c&#8230;research has recently demonstrated that each of these nutrient elements <b>affects specific neurotransmitter systems<\/b> in the brain providing the potential for targeted pharmacologic treatments\u201d <\/i>[instead of targeted drug treatments, we can use targeted amino acid supplements]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><i>\u201cThe American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) now <b>recognizes addictions as a brain disorder<\/b>, and as such, <b>treatments aimed at addressing food addiction must address the dysfunctions at the level of the brain<\/b>\u201d<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><i>\u201cThere are a number of such therapies under investigation targeting <b>neuropathways and neurotransmitters implicated in addiction<\/b>, including: dopaminergic <\/i>[i.e. low or high dopamine, a catecholamine]<i>, opioid <\/i>[i.e. low endorphins],<i> GABAnergic <\/i>[i.e. low GABA or a need for glutamine]<i>, cannabinoid<\/i>,<i> serotonergic <\/i>[i.e. low serotonin],<i> and other novel treatment options.\u201d<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If this scientific information is of interest to you, I encourage you to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3697760\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">read the whole paper here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24511618\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2014 study looking at food addiction<\/a>, in 233 participants, they did find a relationship between food addiction and negative mood i.e. there was: \u201c<i>an inclination toward <b>behaving irrationally while experiencing negative mood <\/b>states (Negative Urgency) and low levels of task persistence (lack of Perseverance)<\/i>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As a reminder here is the table again:<\/p>\n<table style=\"margin: auto; width: 25%; padding: 4px;\">\n<p>Glutamine<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As I said, the research is important, but more important are <b>the incredible results my clients get<\/b> when they have brain chemical deficiencies and <b>use the amino acids in a targeted manner<\/b> addressing each area of deficiency.<\/p>\n<p>Meme Grant, GAPS Practitioner, Nutritional Therapist, FNTP, givennewlife.info participated my <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/emotionaleatinghs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amazing Aminos for Ending Emotional Eating<\/a><\/strong><\/span> program and this is what she said afterwards:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><i>\u201cI still am amazed<\/i><\/strong><i> at <strong>how quickly<\/strong> the <strong>panic attacks, binge eating, and mood swings disappeared<\/strong>. Tyrosine enabled me to <strong>focus and gave me energy<\/strong> to do things again, glutamine allowed me to <strong>walk past the gluten and dairy free junk foods<\/strong>, d-phenylalanine [DPA] <strong>stopped my comfort eating<\/strong>, tryptophan enabled me to <strong>stop my negative thoughts<\/strong> and <strong>helped me sleep<\/strong> but the best was when GABA was introduced, <strong>the panic attacks disappeared<\/strong>.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>This is why I call them the amazing amino acids. And this why addressing neurotransmitter deficiencies can end food addiction and out-of-control sugar cravings (and at the same time they help to eliminate or reduce anxiety, mood issues and insomnia).<\/p>\n<p>Update June 24, 2016:<\/p>\n<p>Research is now further highlighting the connection between food addiction and depression and anxiety.<\/p>\n<p>In this May 2016 paper, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26952267\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Food addiction associations with psychological distress among people with type 2 diabetes<\/a>\u00a0 they looked at the relationship between food addiction and psychological distress among 334 patients with type 2 diabetes and found that those:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>meeting the FA [food addiction] criterion had significantly higher depression, anxiety, and stress scores as compared to participants who did not meet the FA [food addiction] criterion.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This applies whether or not you have type 2 diabetes and whether or not you are overweight.<\/p>\n<p>As you can see in this blog post: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/gaba-for-ending-sugar-cravings-and-anxiety-and-insomnia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GABA for ending sugar cravings (and anxiety and insomnia)<\/a>, Melissa started taking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/source-natural-gaba-calm-anxiety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source Naturals GABA Calm<\/a> in anticipation of stressful holiday travel and holiday gatherings.\u00a0 She felt much calmer when she used GABA Calm and discovered that a wonderful side-benefit (we like side-benefits vs side-effects!) was reduced cravings (as well as improved sleep):<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>An unexpected result was that I stopped craving sweets after about a week of taking it! Can this be the GABA Calm?<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>She was pleasantly surprised as many of my clients are \u2013 she felt more calm, she had better sleep and saw an end to her cravings!<\/p>\n<p>If this is new to you this is what I do with my clients: \u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Have them do the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/amino-acids-mood-questionnaire-from-the-antianxiety-food-solution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amino Acid questionnaire<\/a>\u00a0 so they can figure out if they may have low brain chemicals that are affecting both mood and playing a role in food addiction or cravings. \u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Review the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/amino-acid-precautions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amino Acid Precautions<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Have them <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/how-to-do-an-amino-acid-trial-for-anxiety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">do a trial<\/a>\u00a0 of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/amino-acids-pyroluria-supplements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">relevant amino acids<\/a>, one at a time and monitor how they feel in terms of reduced cravings, less anxiety, improved mood and sleep<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Let us know if this resonates with you and if you have tried the amino acids for food addiction or sugar\/carb cravings?
