The hallmark of low lithium is a rollercoaster of emotions. Keep in mind that this is just one of 12 questionnaires that I have my clients complete. Many of the following symptoms can have multiple causes, the labs may relate to other deficiencies and the conditions have other root causes. This questionnaire simply provides additional evidence that lithium orotate may help.<\/p>\n<p>We typically do a lithium orotate trial, starting with 5 mg once a day, and going up to 10 mg twice a day. We do this after we have started <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/how-to-do-an-amino-acid-trial-for-anxiety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trialing the respective amino acids<\/a>\u00a0for low serotonin, low GABA, low endorphins, low catecholamines and low blood sugar. A big clue that lithium orotate may be helpful (when many of the symptoms below are checked off) is when the amino acids for low serotonin (tryptophan or 5-HTP), low GABA (GABA or theanine), low endorphins (DPA or DLPA), low catecholamines (tyrosine or DLPA) and low blood sugar (glutamine) are not as effective as expected (based on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/amino-acids-mood-questionnaire-from-the-antianxiety-food-solution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">amino acids mood\/neurotransmitter questionnaire<\/a><u>)<\/u>.<\/p>\n<h2>Low lithium questionnaire<\/h2>\n<p><u>Symptoms<br \/>\n<\/u>Mood swings (a rollercoaster of emotions)<br \/>\nAddictions and\/or cravings<br \/>\nDepressed<br \/>\nLow self-esteem<br \/>\nBoredom<br \/>\nEasily distracted<br \/>\nRebellious, disruptive behavior and\/or aggressiveness<br \/>\nIrritability<br \/>\nRestless\/internal anxiety (similar to low serotonin worry\/ruminating anxiety)<br \/>\nRestless\/external anxiety (similar to low GABA physical anxiety)<br \/>\nAnxiety ups and downs (fluctuations)<br \/>\nMelancholic pessimism<br \/>\nSuicidal thoughts<br \/>\nDisorganized with planning difficulties<br \/>\nFocus issues\/ADHD<br \/>\nInsomnia<br \/>\nProcrastination and\/or no initiative<br \/>\nJack of all trades, master of none<br \/>\nImpulsive and\/or lacking tact<br \/>\nPoor insight<br \/>\nRisky behavior<br \/>\nCognitive issues<br \/>\nMigraines or cluster headaches<\/p>\n<p><u>Effectiveness of amino acids<br \/>\n<\/u>The amino acids for low serotonin, low GABA, low endorphins, low catecholamines and low blood sugar are not as effective as expected (based on the amino acids mood\/neurotransmitter questionnaire)<\/p>\n<p><u>Labs<br \/>\n<\/u>Low white blood cell count<br \/>\nLow red blood cell count<br \/>\nAnemia<br \/>\nLow platelet count<\/p>\n<p><u>Conditions<br \/>\n<\/u>Anorexia nervosa<br \/>\nHeart disease (heart arrhythmias, history of heart attack)<br \/>\nRaised blood sugar or diabetes<br \/>\nKleptomania<br \/>\nAlcoholism<br \/>\nAlzheimer\u2019s disease<br \/>\nFibromyalgia<br \/>\nBipolar II<br \/>\nGout<br \/>\nHyperthyroidism<br \/>\nNearsightedness or glaucoma<br \/>\nHerpes infections (current or prone to them)<\/p>\n<h2>If you are new to low dose lithium \/ lithium orotate<\/h2>\n<p>As I share in this blog, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/upping-my-tryptophan-and-lithium-orotate-have-been-absolutely-profound-for-me-ive-been-depression-free-and-anxiety-free-for-over-a-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Upping my tryptophan and lithium orotate have been absolutely profound for me: I\u2019ve been depression free and anxiety free for over a year<\/a>, I\u2019ve used lithium orotate with many clients and use it when folks have mood swings and anxiety ups and downs. It\u2019s harder for the amino acids to work when there is a moving goal post and lithium orotate evens things out.<\/p>\n<p>You can read Katrin\u2019s wonderful results: \u201c<em>Upping my tryptophan dose and also including and upping the dose of lithium orotate has been absolutely profound for me. I\u2019m off my SSRI\/antidepressant (which I was off and on for a number of years). I\u2019ve been depression\/anxiety free for over a year. So fantastic.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The above blog also includes additional information on the differences between low dose lithium \/ lithium orotate and prescription lithium carbonate. The latter is used at much higher doses and does have side-effects.<\/p>\n<p>One of the many ways lithium works is via the impact on neurotransmitter production. This paper, <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s40263-013-0039-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Potential Mechanisms of Action of Lithium in Bipolar Disorder<\/a>, states this: \u201c<em>At a neuronal level, lithium reduces excitatory (dopamine and glutamate) but increases inhibitory (GABA) neurotransmission.<\/em>\u201d It also increases protective proteins such as BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor), helps reduce oxidative stress and is neuroprotective. This paper is referring to lithium carbonate and not lithium orotate but until we have more research on lithium orotate, I feel comfortable extrapolating, given what I\u2019ve seen clinically with lithium orotate.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve also blogged about low dose or microdose lithium here: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/microdose-lithium-formulation-is-capable-of-halting-signs-of-advanced-alzheimers-and-improving-cognition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Microdose lithium formulation is capable of halting signs of advanced Alzheimer\u2019s and improving cognition<\/a>. In a study published in 2020, \u201c<em>a team of researchers has shown that, when given in a formulation that facilitates passage to the brain, lithium in doses up to 400 times lower than what is currently being prescribed for mood disorders is capable of both halting signs of advanced Alzheimer\u2019s pathology and of recovering lost cognitive abilities.<\/em>\u201d\u00a0 In this study, they used lithium citrate in similar doses as the lithium orotate i.e\u00a0 3.2 mg to 6.4 mg NP03 based on 70kg of body weight (which is around 154.3 lbs).<\/p>\n<h2>Resources if you are new to using the amino acids as supplements (and where to get lithium orotate)<\/h2>\n<p>If you are new to using any of the amino acids as supplements, here is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/amino-acids-mood-questionnaire-from-the-antianxiety-food-solution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amino Acids Mood Questionnaire from The Antianxiety Food Solution<\/a> (you can see all the symptoms of neurotransmitter imbalances).<\/p>\n<p>If you suspect low levels of any of the neurotransmitters and do not yet have my book, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everywomanover29.com\/blog\/the-antianxiety-food-solution-by-trudy-scott\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Antianxiety Food Solution \u2013 How the Foods You Eat Can Help You Calm Your Anxious Mind, Improve Your Mood, and End Cravings<\/a>, I highly recommend getting it and reading it before jumping in and using amino acids on your own so you are knowledgeable.
